EAST STROUDSBURG – Behind a career-night from graduate student Ryan Weise (30 points, six rebounds, six assists), the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team defeated Mansfield, 58-53, on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors snap their four-game losing streak to improve to 3-19 overall and 2-17 in the PSAC while the Mounties drop their second straight to move to 7-17 on the season and 6-14 in the conference.
On her way to scoring 30 points, Weise converted 14-of-14 from the free throw, to become the fifth since 2002-03 to record a 100% free throw percentage in a single game (min. 10 makes). Monika Fogelsanger (2008) and Brooke Betts (2003) each went 11-for-11 while Maryellen Onofore (2006) and Alyssa Antolick (2007) were 10-for-10.
Freshman Izzy Vogel was the Warriors' second scoring option all night, finishing with 17 points. The duo of Weise and Vogel would ultimately combine for 47 of ESU's 58 points.
Notables
- Weise became the first player since graduate assistant coach Jordan Hertz on December 21, 2019, to have 20+ point and 5+ assists in a single game
- Along with 17 points, Vogel added six rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal a piece
- Leah Pishock (5 points), Carley Adams (3 points) and Claire Courter (3 points) were the only other scorers for ESU
- The Warriors were 18-of-54 (33.3%) from the field and 7-of-19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc in the game
- ESU overcame a dreadful second quarter which featured going over 8 minutes without scoring and finishing 2-of-12 from the floor
- Mansfield was paced by a double-double from Jasmine Hilton (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Alivia Paeglow, who finished with eight points and 10 rebounds
- The Mounties went 18-of-58 (31.0%) from the floor and were 5-of-16 (31.3%) from the three-point line
- The teams combined to shoot 37 free throws as Mansfield finished 12-of-19 (63.2%) and ESU was 15-of-18 (83.3%)
How It Happened
- With the score at 5-5 to begin the first quarter, ESU proceeded to use a 6-0 run on three-pointers from Vogel and Pishock to give them a 11-5 lead at the 5:02 mark. Out of the media timeout, the Warriors edged 6-4 the rest of period to take a 17-9 lead.
- The Mounties found their grove to open the second quarter, as they went on a 6-0 spurt to cut their deficit to 17-15. Mansfield kept their foot on the gas out of the media break and ESU couldn't buy a shot, as the Mounties took a 20-17 lead before a Warriors timeout. Mansfield would go ahead 23-17 before a floater by Weise snapped over an eight minute scoring drought and Courter converted on a three-pointer to put ESU down 23-22 at the half.
- In a back-and-forth third quarter that featured shooting struggles for teams, Mansfield was 4-of-14 and ESU went 3-of-12 to combine for 26.9% from the field. The Mounties led by as many as four points at 36-32 with 2:23 remaining in the period and took a 37-34 advantage into the fourth quarter.
- After ESU regained a 38-37 advantage at the 7:39 mark in the fourth quarter, the teams traded the lead six times, and the score was tied on four occasion over the next five minutes. The Warriors would ultimately go out in front 50-45 following a Vogel jump shot and over the final 1:57, Weise was able to convert all six free throws for the 58-53 victory.
