MANHEIM, Pa. -- After a February that featured a 5-0 record and a win over nationally-ranked Naomi Henry (NJCU), the National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) announced on Friday afternoon that East Stroudsburg University's Mia Macaluso was named the NWCA NCAA Northeast Region Wrestler of the Month.
Macaluso, who wrestled in her first collegiate match on January 23rd due to an injury, sports a perfect 6-0 record on the season with two wins over ranked opponents.
After defeating No. 8 Anya Knappenberger of Gannon with a 14-12 decision on Jan. 23, Macaluso vaulted into the NWCA National Rankings at 130, earning a No. 7 ranking in the weight class. Her second collegiate match was not any easier, as the Otisville, N.Y. native earned another decision victory over NJCU's Naomi Henry, who ranked No. 5 at 130.
After beginning the month with the ranked decision win, Macaluso, a USA Junior National Champion, dominated the opposition with victories over Tiante Murray (Elmira, pin, 1:42), Ayeska Zanetti (Sacred Heart, tech fall, 28 seconds), Lily Sherer (Lock Haven, pin, 1:22) and Bethany Smith (Hiram, pin, 44 seconds.).
She was a major factor in ESU ending the regular season with wins in its final five dual matches.
Macaluso and 11 other Warriors head to the NCWWC Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday at Gannon. The two mats will be broadcasted on the PSAC Sports Digital Network.
