EAST STROUDSBURG -- A pair of East Stroudsburg University softball freshmen were honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, as Brooke McKeown was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week, while Katie Zaun took home PSAC East Pitcher of the Week accolades, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
The two first-year Warriors have been critical to ESU's success this year, with the Warriors setting a new program-record with a 13-game winning streak and 15-1 start to their 2022 season.
McKeown leads ESU in many offensive categories in 2022. On the week, the Havertown, Pa. native posted a .625 batting average, producing six RBIs as the leadoff hitter, while also showing off her power with a leadoff home run against Queens on Sunday. The centerfielder also stole four bases, and posted five putouts and an outfield assist on the week.
This season, the Haverford High School product ranks seventh in conference in batting average, ninth in RBIs, fourth in stolen bases and third in triples.
Zaun earns her second PSAC East Pitcher of the Week honor this season after not allowing a run to score in two shutouts against Holy Family and Queens this past week. Zaun struckout an impressive 24 batters in the two appearances, fanning 13 batters (one away from tying the school record) against Holy Family while striking out 11 knights against Queens on the road. She did not allow an extra base hit and did not concede an earned or unearned run on the week. She walked just three total batters.
Nationally, Zaun ranks 44rd in hits allowed per seven innings (4th in the PSAC), 12th in strikeout to walk ratio (3rd in PSAC), 16th in strikeouts per seven innings (2nd in PSAC), eight in WHIP (3rd in PSAC) and 40th in walks allowed per seven innings (1.07).
ESU has earned back-to-back PSAC East and three of the last four with Leigh Ann Jenkins earning the conference nod last week.
McKeown and Zaun look to extend the Warrior winning streak to 15 on Tuesday afternoon against Jefferson. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Rams.
