EAST STROUDSBURG – With a pair of highlight-reel worthy goals off the foot of
Rebecca Kotula and
Natalie Schooley, the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer began the season with a 2-0 victory over Dominican on Thursday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
With the victory, the Warriors (1-0), began the season without a loss for the fourth consecutive season. The Chargers (0-1) fall in their season opener on NCAA Division II's opening day of competition.
Notables
- Freshman Rylee Spakowski and Mikayla Moats each registered assists for ESU.
- In her collegiate debut, Emmy Clarkson made a pair of saves in the win.
- Kotula had a goal waived off prior to her goal, smashing a free kick from 30 yards out, but the officials whistled prior to the kick.
- The Wyomissing product recorded seven total shots, with four reaching net. Millie Smith posted five shots, while Schooley and Teagan Marshall both added three attempts.
- Overall, ESU led 23-9 on shots, 13-2 on shots on goal and 4-2 on corner kicks.
- Dominican GK Lauren Drummond made an impressive 11 saves in net to keep the Chargers in the contest.
- ESU dominated possession throughout the contest.
How it Happened
- 39' | Spakowski aggressively stole possession from the Chargers in Dominican's defensive end. The Beachwood, N.J. native then flipped the ball over to Kotula, who one-timed a shot from 35 yards out. The ball floated over Drummond's head and into the top-left corner of the net to lift the Warriors to its first lead of the season.
- 52' | Moats found Schooley in space, who ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the far top-right corner, as Drummond did not have a chance.
