Warriors Explode for Six Second Half Goals in 7-1 Win over Felician

EAST STROUDSBURG – After scoring a single goal during the first 41 minutes, the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team exploded for six goals in the second half in a dominant 7-1 win over Felician on Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

The Warriors (2-0) start the season with two wins in non-conference action before opening the conference slate against Mansfield next weekend. The Golden Falcons (0-1) fall in their season opener.

Millie Smith paced the offense with two goals and two assists for ESU. Rebecca Kotula, who was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter following ESU's first game of the season, added a goal and a pair of assists.

Overall, ESU had six goal scorers account for the seven goals. Also finding the back of the net were Teagan Marshall, Mia Chapman, Alessia Bianchini and Emily Wineburg. Along with Smith and Kotula Natalie Schooley and Molly Bucher tallied assists.

Notables

  • ESU's seven goals in a single game is tied for the most since the Warriors defeated California (Pa.), 9-0, on Sept. 22, 2017.
  • Along with the scoreboard, ESU dominated in possession, shots (34-6), shots on goal (19-5) and corner kicks (7-1).
  • Freshman goalkeeper Emmy Clarkson (W, 2-0) registered four saves on the day in her second career start. Jessica Jara played the final 18 minutes of the contest in goal. Clarkson begins her college career with just one goal allowed along with collecting six saves in 162 minutes of action.
  • Finding the back of the net for Felician was Kate Braun, who stole possession and quickly fired a shot to slice the deficit to 5-1 during the 70th minute of play.
  • Golden Falcon goal keepers Julia Aguilar (9 saves) and Brieanna Martins (3) combined for 12 saves.

How It Happened

  • 41' |  Schooley dribbled possession deep into the offensive zone before rocketing a cross pass to Chapman, who was able to direct the pass in the goal via her chest to the right for her first collegiate goal.
  • 47' | Kotula received a great pass and had separation along the far side of the pitch. Marshall followed Kotula stride-for-stride, anticipating a cross pass as a defender closed in. As Kotula sent the cross, Marshall dived feet first into the ball and flicked a shot into the open net.
  • 55' | Brienn Seaman sent in a free kick that found Rebecca Kotula's foot. The diving Felician goalkeeper was able to get a hand on the shot, but Smith closed in on the rebound and buried her first of two goals on the day.
  • 56' | Less than two minutes later, Smith fired a corner that bounced past the Felician goalkeeper, as Wineburg settled the bounce and headed in a shot with nobody in front of her, for her first collegiate goal.
  • 66' | Smith found Kotula with a beautiful through pass. As the goalkeeper attempted to breakup the pass, Kotula was able to dive just as the keeper made a move towards the ball. Kotula's diving shot went pas the keeper from 15 yards out and trickled into the back of the net.
  • 70' |The Golden Falcons got on the scoreboard in the 70th minute, after Kate Braun stole possession deep in the offensive zone and just beat Clarkson with a shot.
  • 72' | ESU quickly responded, as Smith fired an impressive shot from 25 yards-out that found the lower left corner of the goal.
  • 89' | Evencia Welsh sent a pass to Bucher, who found Bianchini with space. Bianchini would let the pass come to a stop and immediately fire a rocket of a shot 25-yards out that hit the cross bar and would roll into the back of the net.

Up Next

  • Just like that, the Warriors close the non-conference portion of the schedule and open the PSAC East action on Saturday, September 3 at Mansfield. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
  • ESU returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m. against Kutztown.
