Ryan Weise set the single-season record for three pointers and the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team used stifling defense to defeat Kutztown, 60-50, on Monday night inside Keystone Arena.
The Warriors, who had a trio of double figure scorers, improved to 10-9 on the season and 6-6 in the conference, while the Golden Bears dropped their second consecutive game, falling to 9-9 on the season and 7-5 in the conference.
With a three-pointer at the 3:29 mark in the first quarter, Weise set the program's single season record with 64 makes and counting.
Weise, who entered today's game leading the PSAC and NCAA DII in total 3's, finished just short of double-double with nine points, 10 assists, six rebounds, four steals and a block.
Notables
- Sophomore Cassidy Saylor recorded a career-high 17 points to go along with nine rebounds, three steals and a block
- Shyla Sanford added a season-high 17 points as well as one rebound, two assists, two steals and a block
- Sophomore Leah Pishock scored a career-high 14 points while adding a pair of rebounds, one assist and one steal
- ESU shot an effective 23-of-56 (41.1%) overall and 3-of-9 (33.3%) from three point territory
- Kutztown struggled on the offensive end, going 17-of-54 (31.5%) from the field and 6-of-19 (31.6%) from long distance
- At the free throw line, the Warriors were 11-of-18 (61.1%) while Kutztown went 10-of-13 (76.9%)
- The Golden Bears were paced by a double-double from Sydney Pierson on 11 points and 10 rebounds while she also recorded eight blocks, two assists and three steals. Casey Remolde and Naia Pulliam each scored 11 points
- ESU attacked the rim all night, outscoring Kutztown 34-22 in the paint
- The Warriors won the turnover battle, 19-13, but both teams scored 15 points off the miscues

How It Happened
- The Warriors turned defense into offense to begin the game, opening a 6-0 lead before Kutztown converted a trio of three throws headed into the media break. The Golden Bears tied it up at 6-6 before the teams traded a pair of three pointers, which included the record breaking shot from Weise. Over the final 1:48 of the period, ESU scored four points to take a 13-9 advantage.
- ESU carried their momentum over into the second quarter as Pishock poured in four quick points to extend the Warriors' advantage to 17-9. The Golden responded with a 9-4 run over the next 2:47 to cut their deficit to 21-18. Out of an ESU timeout, the Warriors outscored Kutztown, 4-2, the remainder of the way for a 25-20 lead at the end of the first half.
- To begin the second half, the Golden Bears pulled within a possession at 27-25, but the Warriors answered with lay ups from Saylor and Sanford to go back up six points, 31-25. With ESU ahead 34-28 at the media stoppage, the Warriors proceeded to score nine of the next 15 points to push their edge to 43-34 at the end of the third quarter.
- The Warriors ripped off five straight points to begin the final period, growing their lead to 48-34. After a Golden Bears timeout, the team swapped buckets over the next three plus minutes with ESU maintaining a 14-point edge (52-38) at the 4:10 mark. ESU and Kutztown would go back and forth the rest of the way as ESU held on for the 60-50 win.
