EAST STROUDSBURG – Holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, the East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team added a pair of insurance goals in the second half to knock off defending national runner-up West Chester, 3-0, to opening Homecoming Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
With the win, the Warriors (9-1-1, 7-1-1) pick up three points (22) on the Golden Rams (18) (6-2-1, 6-2-0) and currently lead the PSAC with 22 points.
Notables
- Following a first-half own goal by WCU, ESU padded its lead with goals from Caitlin Norwood and Millie Smith. Emily Wineburg registered an assist on Smith's final goal. Norwood's goal is her first of the season, while Smith's score is her fourth of the 2023 campaign.
- ESU avenges its lone loss of the season. WCU defeated ESU, 1-0, back on Sept. 9.
- GK Emmy Clarkson picked up her eighth shutout in 11 contests this season in her ninth victory. Against the Golden Rams, Clarkson made eight saves. WCU GK Grace Keen tallied seven saves in the rare loss.
- ESU led WCU in shots (19-18), shots on goal (10-8) and saves (8-7). Both squads totaled six corner kicks.
- The Warriors have registered four consecutive shutouts, not allowing a goal in 439 combined minutes, since Millersville registered a goal during the 11th minute on Sept. 23. The Warriors look to match its program record five-game shutout streak (1993, 2014, 2016)
- The win for the Warriors is its first over West Chester since 2019, when ESU took down WCU 3-0 at Rockwell Field. The win for the Warriors is their first in six opportunities at Eiler-Martin Stadium, with the last victory coming in 2012.
