Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game at Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team fell on the road to Jefferson, 73-48, on Tuesday evening inside the Gallagher Center.

ESU continued to alternate wins and losses as the Warriors slipped to 2-2 while the Rams remained a perfect 5-0 after facing their third straight PSAC opponent.

Notables
  • Junior Jessica Polin finished with a team-high nine points to go along with five rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks
  • Juniors Cassidy Saylor and Emily Chmiel each poured in eight points while combing for three rebounds and a block
  • In 17 minutes off the bench, sophomore Adrine Demirciyan registered a career-high six points as well as three rebounds and an assist
  • Junior Corrin Gill (three assists, one steal), sophomore Caitlin Marten (one rebound) and freshman Kaitlyn McGeary (three rebounds, one assist) each had four points
  • Five players were in double figures for the Rams as Haley Meinel (four steals) had a game-high 15 points while Sam Yencha recorded a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Kucynski (five assists, four rebounds) totaled 11 points while Morgan Robinson (six assists, six rebounds, three steals) and Cassie Murphy (seven rebounds, three steals, two assists) each added 10 points.
  • Jefferson shot 27-for-58 (46.6%) from the field and 2-for-5 (40%) beyond arc while holding the Warriors to 17-for-33 (32.1%) overall and 2-for-11 (18.2%) from three-point range
  • Both teams were efficient at the free throw line as the Rams finished 17-for-21 (81.0%) compared to 12-for-16 (75.0%) for the Warriors
  • Jefferson held the advantage over ESU in rebounds (41-28), second chance points (18-8), points in the paint (42-24) and points off turnovers (16-10)
How It Happened
  • With the Warriors ahead 3-2 in the first minutes of the game, Jefferson made three straight layups to take an 8-3 lead. ESU cut the deficit to 8-5 and 10-7, but the Rams answered with an 11-0 run in three-plus minutes to push the advantage to double digits at 21-7. Martin stopped the scoreless streak for the Warriors with a layup in the final seconds of the first quarter.
     
  • Jefferson carried over momentum into the second quarter as the Rams opened on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 30-9. Over the final 7:15 of the half, each team scored eight points as Jefferson held a 38-17 edge headed into the break.
     
  • The Rams opened the second half by totaling the first nine points until Demirciyan converted a layup to make the score 47-19. Jefferson would outscore the Warriors, 14-7, over the remainder of the third quarter to extend the lead to 61-26.
     
  • In the fourth quarter, ESU poured in 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting compared to 12 for Jefferson as the Rams hung on for the 73-48 victory.
