Holy Family Outlasts Women’s Basketball, 47-45

EAST STROUDSBURG – Despite having a chance to tie and win the game in the closing seconds, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team fell to Holy Family, 47-45, in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

ESU slowed down but were unable to stop the red-hot Tigers, who won their ninth straight game to improve to 9-1 overall, as the Warriors dropped to 2-5 following their fourth consecutive loss.

After Holy Family's Ava Morrow converted a layup to put the Tigers ahead 47-45 with 1:37 remaining on the clock, the Warriors had the opportunity to tie the game on multiple occasions and win the contest with three-pointer in the final seconds but came up short.

Notables
  • Junior Corrin Gill poured in a career-high 14 points to go along with three rebounds and a trio of assists
  • Fellow teammate Jessica Polin contributed nine points, four assists and two rebounds while Leah Pishock added six points and a rebound in her first game since November 12
  • Junior Izzy Vogel totaled five points as well as one rebound, assist and steal in 17 minutes off the bench while fellow classmate Katie Geisler registered four points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist
  • Senior Gwenn Sabato stuffed the stat sheet in 28 minutes off the bench with three points, three steals, two assists, one rebound and a block
  • Senior Carley Adams added two points from the free throw line and is now shooting 24-for-26 (92.3%) overall at the stripe through seven games
  • Taylor Hinkle (13 points, 12 rebound, two assists, one steal) and Carolyn Prevost (11 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, one steal, one assist) each had a double-double to lead the Tigers while Skyler Searfross (three rebounds, two assists, two steals) was in double figures with 12 points
  • Overall shooting was nearly identical as the Tigers finished 19-for-56 (33.9%) while ESU was 18-for-55 (32.7%)
  • Free throws were limited in the contest as Holy Family went 7-for-9 (77.8%) compared to 4-for-6 (66.7%) for the Warriors
  • The Tigers held the advantages in rebounds (45-30), offensive rebounds (28-20) and points in the paint (32-24) while forcing ESU in 17 turnovers compared to 12
How It Happened
  • Holy Family raced out to a 7-3 lead less than four minutes into the game, but the Warriors battled back with a 6-0 run to jump ahead 9-7. After a layup from Searfross tied it, Sabato knocked down a long range shot to give ESU a 12-9 edge at the end of the first.
     
  • The Warriors carried over momentum into the second period as ESU scored five of the first six points to extend the lead to 17-10. Holy Family battled back with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 17-15, but ESU outscored the Tigers, 9-5, over the final 5:51 of the first half to take a 26-20 lead into the break.
     
  • After both teams converted a pair of buckets to begin the second half (28-20), the Tigers produced an 8-1 spurt to regain a 32-31 advantage. The teams went back and forth over the final 2:25 of the period as Holy Family maintained a one-point edge at 38-37.
     
  • Prevost converted a turnaround jumper to start the fourth quarter, but Gill answered with consecutive buckets to put ESU back ahead 41-40. Holy Family and the Warriors traded points over the next 4:22 as the score was deadlocked at 45-45 with 2:32 on the clock. From that point on, the Tigers scored the only points on a layup from Morrow as Holy Family hung on for the 47-45 win.
