CLARION – After building a 21-point lead in the second quarter, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball found itself down eight points with less than six minutes remaining, but the Warriors closed the game with a 14-0 run to capture a 50-46 win over Clarion on Monday afternoon at Tippin Gymnasium.
The Warriors (3-5, 1-2 PSAC) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, while the Golden Eagles (0-9, 0-3 PSAC) remain winless on the season.
Notables
- ESU was led by a pair of double-figure scorers in Cassidy Saylor (12 pts., 5-12 FG) and Izzy Vogel (10 pts.). Vogel stuffed the stat sheet with a team and season-high 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block in her first double-double of the season and the second of her career. Saylor brought down six boards, two blocks and a pair of steals in 35 minutes on the floor.
- Gwenn Sabato tallied eight points and eight boards while Carley Adams added eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
- In 30 minutes off the bench for Clarion, Autumn Taylor poured in a game-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds and a trio of assists. Heather Ansell contributed eight points and two rebounds while Sadre'a Rougeau did a little bit of everything with five points, four rebounds, four steals and an assist.
- Neither team could find a shooting rhythm as the Warriors finished 18-for-60 (30.0%) overall and 3-for-16 (18.8%) from three point territory while the Golden Eagles went 18-for-60 (30.0%) and 3-for-16 (18.8%) beyond the arc
- At the free throw line, ESU shot 11-for-18 (61.1%) compared to 7-for-11 (63.8%) for Clarion
- The Warriors outpaced the Golden Eagles in points in the paint (26-18), points off turnovers (12-11) and rebounds (48-45) but Clarion had the edge in bench points (37-8)
How It Happened
- The Warriors started strong from the opening tip, building an 18-5 edge after starting the game by shooting 6-11 from the field and made all three of its 3-point attempts. ESU held Clarion to make just two of its first 11 field goal attempts to build the sizeable lead. After a pair of Golden Eagles free throws cut the deficit to 11 with 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter, the Warriors closed the quarter strong with six consecutive points to take a 31-27 lead into the second quarter.
- After the Warriors took a game-high 21-point lead at 30-9 with 5:58 left until halftime, Clarion settled and scored 18 of the final 19 points in the half, cutting the halftime deficit to just four at 31-27.
- After the intermission, ESU extended its lead early to 35-29 after a layup and a pair of free throws by Sabato. The Golden Eagles closed the third quarter strong with a 12-2 run, taking a 41-37 edge into the fourth quarter.
- The Warriors trailed 46-38 with six minutes left after a strong start by Clarion in the final quarter. ESU stayed poised and closed the final stretch of the game strong with a game-ending 14-0 run.
