MANSFIELD – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Mansfield after the Warriors took down the Mounties, 63-41, on Wednesday evening at Marion Decker Gymnasium.
Opening the second half of the PSAC East schedule, the Warriors move to 12-9 on the season and 8-7 in the league while the Mounties fall to 2-17 overall and 1-14 in the conference.
Recording nearly identical stat lines, sophomore
Izzy Vogel notched 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block while graduate student
Ryan Weise recorded 16 points, four boards, two assists and one steal.
Notables
- Sophomores Cassidy Saylor and Katie Geisler each scored eight points while combining for eight rebounds
- Jessica Polin added six points, three steals and an assist
- Sophomore Corrin Gill stuffed the stat sheet with two points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals
- Graduate student Shyla Sanford finished with one point but pulled down five rebounds while distributing five assists
- ESU shot 23-of-60 (38.3%) from the field and 6-of-17 (35.3%) from long distance, while Mansfield finished 15-of-48 (31.3%) overall and struggled from three point territory by going 1-of-11 (9.1%)
- At the free throw line, the Warriors went 11-of-18 (61.1%) compared to 10-of-14 (71.4%) for the Mounties
- Jasmine Hilton posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Mansfield while Danae Ellzy was in double figures with 13 points to go along with four rebounds
- The turnover margin played a major factor as ESU held a 25-10 advantage, which the Warriors turned into 23 points compared to just two for the Mounties
- The back and forth continues in the PSAC East standings as ESU moves back into a tie with Kutztown for the No. 3 seed
- The Warriors have now defeated Mansfield in 18 of their last 19 meetings and hold a 65-17 edge in the all-time series
How It Happened
- The teams went back and forth to open the game as ESU shot 3-of-7 while Mansfield went 4-of-8 to put the score at 8-8. Out of the media break, the Warriors caught fire by using a 12-4 spurt over the final 4:01 of the first quarter to take a 20-12 lead.
- ESU carried over their momentum into the second quarter, going on a 13-3 run, which included a trio of baskets from Vogel and a pair of three pointers by Weise to extend the Warriors' advantage to 33-15. Following a Mounties' timeout, the teams each scored six points over the remainder of the period which gave ESU a 39-21 lead at the break.
- To begin the second half, the teams struggled offensively as they combined to shot 2-for-10 which allowed ESU to maintain an 18-point advantage at 43-25. Then over a three and a half minute stretch, the Mounties outscored the Warriors by a slim margin to trim their deficit to 49-34, but ESU answered with consecutive long distance shots from Polin for a 55-34 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- The fourth quarter failed to produce much offense for either team with the Warriors scored eight points on 3-of-15 from the field compared to seven points for the Mansfield on 3-of-11 shooting. ESU grabbed their largest lead of the game at 23 points with 6:13 to go in the periord.
