Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against Millersville in PSAC Tournament

MILLERSVILLE – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball saw its 2022-23 season come to an end as Millersville defeated the Warriors, 72-65, in the First Round of the PSAC Tournament on Monday night at Pucillo Gymnasium.

The Warriors finish the season 15-14 overall, which was an 11-win improvement from a season ago while the Marauders advance to the quarterfinals to face top-seeded West Chester.

In her final game wearing the red and black, Ryan Weise did it all for the Warriors as the graduate student finished with a game-high 27 points (9-of-17 FG, 7-of-13 3FG), to go along six rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block.

Notables
  • Sophomore Jessica Polin (one rebounds, two steals) was ESU's next highest scorer with nine points while fellow classmate Izzy Vogel added eight points, four assists and one rebound
     
  • Leah Pishock added six points and two rebounds while Carley Adams contributed four points and one board
     
  • Graduate student Shyla Sanford (five rebounds, four assists, four steals, one block), junior Gwenn Sabato (two rebounds) as well as sophomores Katie Geisler (three rebounds, one assist) and Cassidy Saylor each registered two points
     
  • The Marauders were an efficient 29-of-51 (56.9%) overall from the field and 1-of-4 (25.0%) from three point territory, while the Warriors finished 26-of-59 (44.1%) from the floor and 8-of-17 (47.1%) from long distance
     
  • At the free throw line, Millersville shot 13-of-15 (86.7%) compared to only 5-of-8 (62.5%) for ESU
     
  • The Marauders held the advantage in rebounds, 36-24, and outscored the Warriors, 50-30, in the paint
     
  • Weise finished the year with 97 three pointers which is 34 more than any other player in school history for a single season. With her seven additional three pointers this evening, Weise brought her career total in two seasons to 158, ranking second all-time in program history.
     
  • The Allentown, N.J. native shot 42.7% (97-of-227) overall from three-point territory which ranks as the third highest percentage for a season and finished her time at ESU with a 40.3% (158-of-392) clip which is the best mark for a career
     
  • The graduate student totaled 138 assists in 2022-23 which is the ninth-most in a single season and 235 dimes for her career is tied for 12th all-time
     
  • In two seasons at the free throw line, Weise finished 107-of-130 (82.3%) which is the highest percentage by a Warrior in a career
How It Happened
  • With Millersville taking a 4-2 lead less than a minute into the game, the Warriors ripped off a 9-2 run to jump ahead 11-6 at the 7:26 mark in the first quarter. It was back and forth over the next three minutes but with ESU in front 18-12, the Marauders went on a 7-0 run to take the lead back at 19-18. Weise answered with her third three of the period and after four straight points from Millersville, Pishock knocked down a jumper to make the score 23-23 after the first 10 minutes.
     
  • The Warriors came out on fire in the second quarter, scoring the first seven points to regain a 30-23 advantage, but Millersville responded with a 7-0 spurt of their own to tie the score at 30-30. With ESU leading 31-30 at the 4:22 mark, the Marauders scored eight of the final points in the half to take a 38-34 edge into the locker room.
     
  • The Marauders increased their lead to 42-36 to open the second half but four quick points from ESU got them within two at the 7:09 mark. Over the next two minutes, Millersville edge the Warriors by one point to take a 45-42 lead at the media timeout. Out of the break, the Marauders knocked down three consecutive layups until Polin stopped the run. The Marauders would then score the final six points of the third quarter to extend their advantage to 57-44.
     
  • It was back and forth to begin the fourth quarter as Millersville continued to lead 63-49 until seven straight points from ESU cut their deficit to 63-56. The Marauders responded with five of the next seven points to go back up by double digits at 68-58 but a three pointer from Weise made the score 68-61 with 3:01 remaining. After neither team scored for the next two-plus minutes, Vogel got ESU to within five points at 68-33 with 25 seconds to go but the Marauders iced the game with four free throws.
