Defense Leads Women’s Basketball to Road Win at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG – Led by a strong defensive effort that forced a season-high 27 turnovers, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team recorded a 52-42 victory over Bloomsburg on Monday night at Nelson Field House.

The Warriors revenged their loss to Bloomsburg from earlier in the season, pushing their record to 13-10 and 9-8 in the PSAC, while the Huskies were held to a season-low point total, dropping to 8-13 overall and 6-11 in the conference.

ESU matched their season-high with 13 steals and took advantage of the Huskies miscues by scoring 22 points off them.

Despite a player failing to scoring in double figures, Ryan Weise stuffed the stat sheet for the Warriors with nine points, seven rebounds, five steals and a pair of blocks.

Notables
  • Graduate student Shyla Sanford added eight points, two boards, one assists and a pair of steals
     
  • Sophomores Katie Geisler and Corrin Gill each scored eight points, shooting a perfect 4-of-4, while combing for a trio of steals
     
  • Carley Adams added seven points, two rebounds and an assist while Izzy Vogel (five rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block) and Leah Pishock (three rebounds, one steal) both poured in six points
     
  • Attacking the hoop led to success for ESU as the Warriors finished went 20-of-41 (48.8%) overall from the field, knocking down only one basket from long distance. The Huskies finished 18-of-50 (36.0%) from the floor.
     
  • Neither team found a rhythm from three-point territory as ESU (1-of-6) and Bloomsburg (1-of-12) combined to shoot 11.1 percent
     
  • The Warriors cashed in at the free throw line, shooting 11-of-16 (68.8%) while the Huskies went 5-of-9 (55.6%)
     
  • Katelin Starr did it all for Bloomsburg as she posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Gochnauer added eight point, six rebounds and one steal
     
  • Bloomsburg held the edge in rebounds 36-22, which included a 16-5 mark on the offensive end, but the Warriors outscored the Huskies in the paint, 36-28
     
  • ESU remains in a tie for Millersville for the third seed in the PSAC East but the Warriors and Marauders square off on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse
     
  • The Warriors snap their three-game losing streak to Bloomsburg, but the Huskies maintain a 57-30 edge in the all-time series
How It Happened
  • The Warriors took a 4-0 lead to open the game, but the Huskies responded by scoring six of the next seven points to go ahead 6-5. Out of the media break, the teams went back and forth but with the score tied at 10-10, ESU closed out the first quarter on a 4-0 spurt for a 14-10 advantage.
     
  • ESU took their momentum over into the second quarter, going on a 6-2 run to stretch their lead to 20-12 at the media timeout. The Warriors kept it rolling, growing their edge to nine points at 25-14 until the Huskies scored five points over the final 1:02 to trim their deficit to 25-19 at the break.
     
  • Neither team could find their rhythm offensively out of the locker room as the Huskies scored the first four points to get within two at 25-23. Gill snapped the drought at the 4:46 mark and caught fire along with ESU as the Warriors ripped off a 12-4 run in a two and a half minute span to go up by 10 points (37-27) headed into the final period.
     
  • The Huskies chipped away at ESU's advantage to start the fourth quarter, cutting it to 39-33 until the Warriors scored six straight points for their largest lead at 45-33. Bloomsburg would only get as close as 10 points the over the final 4:45 of the game, as ESU secured the 52-42 victory.
