EAST STROUDSBURG – Clinging to a 10-9 lead in the fourth quarter, the No. 8 East Stroudsburg University lacrosse team recorded three of the final four goals to earn a 13-10 victory over IUP in non-conference action on Sunday at Whitenight Field.
The Warriors (3-1) pick up their second consecutive win, while the Crimson Hawks drop to 1-2.
Notables
- Entering the day with zero collegiate points in three games, ESU freshman Hannah Schiemer led the Warriors with five points on four goals and an assist. She added three draw controls, along with tallying two ground balls and caused a turnover.
- Madison Bagatta added four points on two goals and two assists. She also contributed a draw control and ground ball.
- Jolee Roth totaled three points on a pair of goals and also distributed an assist. She scooped three ground balls on the afternoon.
- Kiki Fitzpatrick added two goals, both via free-position shots. She also caused a turnover and earned a ground ball.
- Campbell Heller, Emily Mitarotonda, and Lauren Hallman also registered a goal. Heller led ESU with six draw controls and also provided three groundballs. Mitarotonda was limited to just one goal after tallying at least three the previous 20 games, after exiting the contest early due to two yellow cards. The Rockaway, N.J. native also picked up a pair of DCs.
- Maggie Sell has continued her strong start to her senior season, causing six turnovers, while scooping five ground balls to lead all defenders. She has totaled 14 caused turnovers and 20 ground balls in four games.
- ESU GK Riley DiFiore was a brick wall, posting 10 saves to prevent a Crimson Hawk comeback. In four games this season, DiFiore has posted 41 saves, recording an even .500 save percentage.
- Sarah Reustle provided a hat trick for IUP, while Jordan Kulp and Kathryn Burk also found the back of the cage multiple times.
How It Happened
- It was the Crimson Hawks that opened the contest strong, posting back-to-back goals in the opening three minutes. ESU settled with Warrior freshmen Schiemer and Roth finding the back of the cage to even the contest with 9:44 to go.
- The Crimson Hawks responded within 34 seconds, taking its final lead of the game at 3-2. The Warriors reacted with a game-altering 6-0 scoring run, as ESU built an 8-3 lead nearing halftime. The Hawks scored to of the final three goals in the opening half, as ESY led 9-5 after 30 minutes at Whitenight.
- Following the quick intermission, IUP gained momentum. The Hawks got within a single goal at 10-9, with what would be a 5-1 IUP scoring run. With Mitarotonda exiting the game with 10:59 left in the third quarter, ESU needed offense and stops. Heller and Fitzpatirck extended the Warrior lead to three at 12-9 with 9:14 remaining. Reustle closed IUP's scoring with 2:48 left, as Bagatta deposited the final goal with 1:38 to go to seal the win.
