McCarthy, Terwilliger Nominated for Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – The America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced on Tuesday that East Stroudsburg University defensive end Deshawn McCarthy and head coach Jimmy Terwilliger were named nominees for the 2023 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

McCarthy and Terwilliger have served roles and volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Be The Match and the Salvation Army, along with helping out a local soup kitchen.
McCarthy serves as a "Big Brother" in the local Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania, spending time as a mentor and role model to his "Little, all while juggling classes and football responsibilities. The Philadelphia native has helped with team community service activities with the Salvation Army (bell ringer) a soup kitchen, along with  "Pick Up The Poconos", which helps preserve the beauty of the Pocono Mountains by cleaning up litter in the community.

Terwilliger has helped engineer one of the most successful Be The Match and the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation recurring events in the #RelentlesS Get In The Game Marrow Drive in memory of Ryan Smith and Alyssa Oxenford. Over the past two years, the drive has added 952 potential donors to the Be The Match registry, along with 1,372 over the past five years. This past January, the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation honored ESU and Terwilliger for totaling the most donors in NCAA Division II in 2022.

The Warrior head coach also serves as a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern PA, honoring the organization and its members at a game each season.



The final 22-member Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and honorary coach will be selected by a panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists. They look for exceptional leadership on and off the football field.

McCarthy and Terwilliger will be considered among the 136 nominees to be a part of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The panel features Tim Tebow; Troy Hawkes (Allstate, executive vice president and general manager, Allstate Sales and Distribution; Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team); Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998); Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001); Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002); Wes Counts (Middle Tennessee State, 1999); media members Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN); Blair Kerkhoff (Kansas City Star); and Paul Myerberg (USA Today); 2023 AFCA President and Ouachita Baptist University Head Coach Todd Knight; and 2014 AFCA President and former head coach at Ithaca College, Mike Welch.

Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. From the 136 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients will bring together 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision; 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); and one honorary head coach. To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining strong academic standing.
About the AFCA
The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 11,000 members around the world ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and in the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football."
