ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University women's soccer team broke through in the second half as the Warriors found the back of the three time to defeat Dominican, 3-0, in the season opener on Thursday afternoon at OMM Field #5.
With the victory, the Warriors (1-0) began the season without a loss for the fifth consecutive year while the Chargers dropped to 0-1.
Notables
·         Rebecca Kotula, an All-PSAC East First Team selection a season ago, picked up right where she left off as the graduate student scored her first goal of the season and 14th of her career in the 49th minute to put ESU ahead 1-0
·         Junior Millie Smith found the back of the net in the 73rd minute for her first goal of the season and sixth in her career, giving the Warriors a 2-0 edge
·         Ten minute later, senior Carina Gasparini capped off the scoring for ESU with a goal in the 83rd minute to make the final score 3-0. 
·         Natalie Schooley and Emily Wineburg each tallied their first assists of the season. It marked the fifth career assist for Schooley and fourth for Wineburg. 
·         Sophomore Emmy Clarkson recorded one save and notched her sixth career shutout
·         Overall, the Warriors led 25-5 in shots, 15-1 in shots on goal and 5-2 on corner kicks
·         Meagan DeWan collected her first career victory as a head coach
How it Happened
49' | The Warriors cashed in on their second corner of the afternoon as Schooley served the ball into the box where a sprinting Kotula flicked it with her head into the bottom left corner of the goal. 
73' | Following a foul near midfield, Wineburg lofted a long pass near the net that the Dominican goalkeeper miss handled, which resulted in Smith tapping the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead
83' | Maddie Root initially sent a pass into the box that was attempting to be cleared by the Chargers' defender until Gasparini stepped in front to redirect the ball in the back of the net for ESU's third goal
