Volleyball Falls Twice on Opening Day at Frostburg State Tournament

FROSTBURG, MD. – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team was defeated in a pair of matches on Friday at the Frostburg State Tournament. After dropping the opener to Walsh, 3-0, the Warriors fell to the hosts, 3-1, to close out day one inside Bobcat Arena.

The Warriors open the 2023 season 0-2. 

Notables vs. Walsh
  • Senior Sydney Stone paced the Warriors with eight kills while sophomore Anna Coulter added six kills, two digs, blocks and aces a piece
  • Redshirt senior Kaylee LoPresto and graduate student Jasmin Perry combined for eight kills, five digs and four blocks
  • Senior Makayla Baca notched 11 digs and junior Taylor Haan dished out 20 assists to go along with six digs
  • Walsh posted a .170 hitting percentage (35 kills, 17 errors) and recorded 13 blocks which resulted in the Warriors hitting .060 (30 kills, 23 errors)
  • The Cavaliers were led by Keanna Avery with 10 kills, six digs and seven blocks
How it Happened vs. Walsh
  • ESU registered the first point of the match, but Walsh went on 9-3 run with the help of three kills, an ace and five errors by the Warriors to take a 9-4 lead. After the ESU made the score 9-5, the Cavaliers ripped off three straight points (12-5) to force the Warriors into a timeout. ESU found their rhythm out of the break, scoring four consecutive points to trim their deficit to 12-9, but Walsh responded with a 3-0 spurt to go back ahead 15-9. The Warriors would get as close as four points (16-12), before Walsh ended on a 9-2 run to win the set, 25-14, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • The Warriors jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, but the Cavaliers answered with a 6-2 run to grab an 8-7 lead. The teams went back and forth for the next 16 points each scoring eight until Walsh produced a 3-0 spurt to pull ahead 19-15. A timeout served ESU as the well as the Warriors ripped of five straight points to regain a 20-19 lead, but Walsh scored five of the next six to make the score 24-21. The Warriors fended off three straight set points to tie it at 24-24, but a kill by the Cavaliers and attack error by ESU gave Walsh a 26-24 set two win and 2-0 edge.
  • With the score tied at 4-4 to begin the third set, Walsh took control with an 8-3 run to grab a 12-7 lead. Out of a timeout, ESU bounced back with a 5-0 spurt of their own to tie the score at 12-12. Similar to the previous frame, the teams swapped the next eight points until the Cavaliers used a trio of kills, two attack errors by the Warriors and an ace to jump in front 22-16. A kill by Coulter stopped the run but the Cavaliers went on to win the set, 25-20, to clinch a 3-0 victory in the match.
Notables vs. Frostburg State
  • The Warriors were led by a pair of double-doubles as graduate student Claire Choloux recorded 11 kills and 15 digs, while Haan finished with a 38 assists and 11 digs
  • Coulter added 11 kills, three digs and three blocks
  • Junior Makaela McComas (10) and Baca (16) combined for 26 digs
  • For the Bobcats, Emma Larkins notched a match-high 21 kills and Beverly Braun recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 20 digs
  • ESU finished with a 42 kills and 20 errors compared (.148 hitting %) to 57 kills and 25 errors (.188) for Frostburg State
How it Happened vs. Frostburg State
  • The Bobcats opened the match with a 4-1 lead and pushed their advantage to 12-7, until the Warriors battled back to tie the score at 15-15. With the teams still deadlocked at 19-19, Frostburg State went on to outscore ESU 7-2 down the stretch with six kills to win the set 25-21 for a 1-0 lead in the match.  
  • It was back and forth to begin the second set as ESU jumped out in front in 6-1 before the Bobcats evened it up at 7-7. With the score still tied at 12-12, the Warriors used an 8-4 run to pull ahead 20-16. Frostburg State remained within striking distance at 22-20 but ESU scored the final three points to take the set and knot the match at 1-1.
  • The third set was tightly contested throughout as the teams went back and forth until the Warriors went up 12-10. Frostburg State clawed their way back using a 6-3 run to jump ahead 18-14. The Bobcats' lead grew to as much as four at 22-18, but the Warriors with a 4-0 spurt to tie it up at 22-22. ESU proceeded to fend off two set points with Frostburg State ahead 24-22, but the Bobcats closed out the set with two kills (26-24) for a 2-1 advantage.
  • ESU held a slim lead at 5-3 in the final set but a quick 7-2 run by Frostburg State put them ahead 10-7. The Bobcats continued to stretch their lead to 17-12, until ESU slowly pulled within reach at 22-21 following a 9-5 run. However, Frostburg State ended the set with three straight points to win the match 3-1.
