LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – After causing havoc in a 13-12 upset victory over No. 12 IUP, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced on Monday afternoon that Deshawn McCarthy was named the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week.

McCarthy recorded eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and took down IUP's Kart Hunter twice on sacks. He was also credited with a quarterback hurry. Both of his sacks and his QB hurry came on 3rd down, forcing the Crimson Hawks to punt times of their four punts overall on the afternoon.

McCarthy helped the Warrior defense hold strong in the run game, allowing just 1.4 yards per carry on 36 rushes for a total of 52 yards on the ground.

In two games, McCarthy ranks fourth on the team with 12 tackles, first in tackles for losses and sacks. He ranks 23rd nationally and is tied for the PSAC lead with California's Ibrahim Sanogo in sacks.

Defensively, ESU's defense has shined in both contests, ranking third in the country in defensive touchdowns, ninth in scoring defense 18th in sacks, 18th in forced turnovers and 32nd in teams tackles for loss. Among all-time leaders in sacks in program history, the Philadelphia native now has 27 career sacks. He is just four sacks away from passing Joe Ruedt for third all-time at ESU. McCarthy currently ranks fifth all time, with Des Hussey (1988-91) and Bill Camp (1981-84) both having 33 sacks.

The weekly honor is the third of his career, after being selected as the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week twice during the 2021 season.

The Warriors look to start the campaign 3-0 for the first time since 2019, when ESU welcomes Seton Hill for Family Weekend. Kickoff from Eiler-Martin Stadium is set for Sat., Sept. 16 at 1:05 p.m.
