EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team dropped their home opener as the Warriors were swept by Georgian Court to begin the ESU Tri-Match on Friday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse. The set scores were 25-17, 25-23 and 25-22.
The Warriors slipped to 3-5 overall while the Lions improved to 6-3 after defeating Saint Rose in five sets earlier in the evening.
Notables vs. Georgian Court
- Claire Choloux registered her second double-double of the season as the graduate student finished with 10 kills and 15 digs
- Sophomore Anna Coulter and redshirt senior Kaylee LoPresto combined for 15 kills and 13 digs
- Junior Taylor Haan notched 28 assists, five digs, two kills and an ace
- Senior libero Makayla Baca had double digit digs for the eighth consecutive match with 14
- Georgian Court were led by a pair of double doubles from Giorgia Cappelletti (15 kills, 12 digs) and Nylene Mateo (10 kills, 11 digs). Chelsea Ross posted an impressive eight blocks (five solo)
- The Lions finished with a .189 hitting percentage (42 kills, 17 errors) compared to a .091 clip (32 kills, 21 errors) for ESU
How it Happened vs. Georgian Court
- After the Warriors scored the first point of the match, Georgian Court went on 12-5 run to pull ahead 12-6. Following an ESU timeout, the Lions kept their foot on the gas, extending the lead to 20-11. The Warriors stayed within striking distance at 23-17, but Georgian Court scored the final two points to win the set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
- Georgian Court carried momentum over into the second set, jumping out 6-1 until six consecutive points by ESU gave the Warriors a 7-6 advantage. The Warriors maintained their lead at 13-11, but a quick 3-0 spurt by the Lions put them back ahead 14-13. Out of an ESU timeout, Georgian Court scored six of the next nine points to stretch their edge to 20-16. The Warriors would battle back with a 7-3 run to tie the set at 23-23 until the Lions scored the last two points to ultimately go up 2-0 in the match.
- In a back-and-forth third set, the Warriors raced out to an 8-4 lead, but the Lions clawed their way back with a 5-1 run to even the score. ESU and Georgian Court would trade the 16 points until a 5-0 run by the Lions put them in front 22-17. ESU wouldn't go down without a fight as the Warriors made the score 24-22 until a kill by Georgian Court finished off the sweep.
