Second Half Surge Powers Women’s Basketball Past Shippensburg, 72-60

EAST STROUDSBURG – With the score tied at halftime, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team used a strong second half by outscoring Shippensburg 42-30 to propel them to a 72-60 win on Saturday afternoon inside Koehler Fieldhouse.   

With the victory, the Warriors improved to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in the conference while the Raiders fell to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in the PSAC.

In 28 minutes off the bench, senior Gwenn Sabato poured in a career-high 17 points, going 6-for-11 overall and 4-for-9 from long range, to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
 

Making her second consecutive start, junior Emily Chmiel did it all for the Warriors as the Doylestown native tallied her first double-double in an ESU uniform on 16 points and 11 rebounds while matching her career-high with five blocks and adding a pair of steals.
 

Additionally in double figures for ESU Katie Geisler with 11 points as the junior added eight rebounds, one steal and a block.

ESU and Shippensburg found themselves deadlocked at 30-30 following the first 20 minutes of action, but the Warriors caught fire in the third quarter as they outscored the Raiders, 23-12, after shooting an efficient 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from the floor and knocking down 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
 

Notables
  • Izzy Vogel stuffed the stat sheet as the junior finished with nine points, four assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block
  • Senior Carley Adams added eight points, three assists and two rebounds which included shooting 4-for-6 at the free throw line to push her percentage on the season to 81.8 (40-for-49)
  • Playing all 40 minutes, junior Corrin Gill filled it up with seven points, a season-high eight assists, three rebounds, one steal and a block
  • Playing a season-high 19 minutes off the bench, Leah Pishock registered two points, a career-high five assists and four rebounds
  • The double-double was the 19th of Chmiel's career as she registered 18 in two seasons at Chestnut Hill
  • Shippensburg's Treasure George finished with a game-high 21 points and five rebounds while Bella Chimienti had 16 points and three rebounds. Mia Johnson added eight points, nine rebounds and three steals
  • The Warriors shot a season-high 49.2 percent (29-for-59) overall and 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from three-point territory while holding Shippensburg to 31.6 percent (18-for-57) shooting from the field and 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from long distance
  • ESU doubled up Shippensburg in points in the paint as the Warriors outscored the Raiders 44-22
  • The Warriors assisted on an impressive 23 of 29 shots made
  • With the victory, the Warriors snapped a two-game losing streak to the Raiders and improved to 21-41 all-time against Shippensburg
How It Happened
  • Shippensburg scored the first five points of the game and were leading 8-4 until the Warriors scored on consecutive possessions to tie it at 8-8. The teams went back and forth over the final 4:38 of the first quarter as ESU outscored the Raiders by two points (10-8) to take an 18-16 advantage.
     
  • Shippensburg regained the lead at 22-21 early in the second quarter until the Warriors went on a 7-0 run to jump back in front 28-22 with 4:18 on the clock. After a scoreless two minutes stretch for both teams, the Raiders concluded the first half on an 8-2 run to even the score at 30-30.
     
  • ESU and Shippensburg swapped buckets to open the third quarter, but with the score tied at 38-38, the Warriors caught fire with a 15-4 run over the last 4:11 of the period to regain a 53-42 edge headed into the final 10 minutes.
     
  • Momentum carried over for ESU into the fourth quarter as the Warriors scored the first eight points to stretch the lead to 61-42 before a Raiders' layup stopped the run. ESU took its largest lead of the game at the 4:11 mark in the fourth quarter with the score at 67-47 and ultimately pulled out a 72-60 victory over Shippensburg.
