MANSFIELD – Despite a career-high 28-point effort from junior
Emily Chmiel, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team suffered a 71-51 setback to Mansfield on Wednesday evening inside Marion Decker Gymnasium.
Wrapping up the first half of the PSAC East schedule, the Warriors dropped to 7-12 on the season and 5-9 in conference whereas the Mounties moved to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the league.
In 22 minutes, Chmiel shot an impressive 10-for-17 (58.8%) overall and 8-for-10 (80.0%) at the free throw line to total 28 points, while recording her third double-double of the season with 13 rebounds.
Notables
- Junior Izzy Vogel added nine points and three rebounds while matching her season-high with four steals
- In 10 minutes off the bench, senior Leah Pishock (one rebound) and freshman Kaitlyn McGeary (three bounds) each scored four points
- Sophomore Adrine Demirciyan added three points, two rebounds and an assist, while freshman Lacie Kringe registered her first collegiate points (2) and assist
- Mansfield had nine players score points, but three Mounties totaled double figure including a game-high 19 from Kristen Fulford to go with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Katie Sheeler added 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Jasmine Hilton filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.
- The Warriors shot 35.2 percent overall (19-for-54) despite not making a three-pointer (0-for-6) and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) at the charity stripe
- Mansfield finished an efficient 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-for-16) beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (12-for-18) at the free throw line
- 28 turnovers plagued the Warriors as Mansfield turned the miscues into 23 points
- ESU dominated Mansfield on the glass, outrebounding the Mounties 43-28 overall and 16-6 on the offensive end
- Today's win for Mansfield was just the second in the last 22 meetings between the two teams, dating back to 2013, as the Mounties most recent victory over ESU came back on January 5, 2022
How It Happened
- ESU led 6-4 midway through the first quarter as Chmiel scored all six points for the Warriors. After Pishock converted a layup to extend the edge to 8-4 (4:45), the Mounties went on a 6-0 run in 1:39 to jump in front 10-8. Chmiel would knot the score at 10-10 with her eighth point of the period, but Mansfield closed out on a 13-1 run to take a 23-11 advantage.
- The Warriors turned a Mansfield turnover into a layup to start the second quarter as ESU's deficit was cut to 23-13, until the Mounties scored 12 of the next 14 points to regain a 35-15 lead. Out of the media break, Mansfield continued their hot shooting as the Mounties wrapped up the first half on a 9-4 run to push the edge to 44-19 at the break.
- The teams each totaled seven points to open the third quarter, but Chmiel continued to carry the Warriors with a personal 4-0 run which trimmed Mansfield's lead to 51-30. Following the media timeout, the Mounties caught fire by closing out the final 4:09 on a 10-4 run to regain a 61-34 advantage.
- In the fourth quarter, ESU outscored Mansfield by seven points, 17-10, but were unable to cut the gap as the Mounties earned a 71-51 victory.
