No. 3 Warriors Take Down Slippery Rock for Fourth Straight Win

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The No. 3 East Stroudsburg University field hockey team scored in the second and third quarters and kept Slippery Rock off the board to secure a 2-0 road win on Sunday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Warriors (11-2, 3-1 PSAC) earned their fourth consecutive win and posted their second straight shutout. The Rock (2-8, 0-5 PSAC) remains winless in conference play.

Notables

  • The Dutch duo of Minke Klijn and Jady van Gils provided the offense for the Warriors. Klijn opened the scoring in the 19th minute, with Allyson Forman finding her in front of the net for the game's first goal.
  • Van Gils extended the lead with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter. Forman inserted a penalty corner, and van Gils split two defenders before firing a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage.
  • Klijn and van Gils continue to lead the ESU offense this season, accounting for 21 of the team's 47 goals. With her third-quarter goal, van Gils increased her career totals to 27 goals and 26 assists, giving her 80 points in 72 games.
  • Goalkeepers Jet Vermeulen and Sydney Pope combined for their second consecutive shutout. Vermeulen picked up her eighth win in nine decisions. Neither goalkeeper faced a shot on goal in the victory. SRU's Grace Burker made two saves in the loss.
  • The Warriors outshot Slippery Rock 8-5 and held a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal. ESU also led 8-6 in penalty corners.

No. 3 ESU (11-2, 3-1 PSAC) returns to Whitenight Field on Wednesday to host No. 4 Bloomsburg (11-3, 3-2 PSAC) in the first game of a campus tripleheader against the Huskies.The ESU women's (4:30 p.m.) and men's (7:00 p.m.) soccer teams will also take on Bloomsburg at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The top-five field hockey clash is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
