EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Trailing 2-0 in the third quarter, the No. 3 East Stroudsburg University field hockey team stormed back to defeat No. 4 Bloomsburg 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
The Warriors (12-2, 4-1 PSAC) extended their winning streak to five games and are now tied with Kutztown for second place in the conference. The Huskies fell to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC.
In the 68th minute and eighth minute of overtime, Jady van Gils accepted an insertion from Minke Klijn and found Bella Viruet on the far side of the net for the game-winning goal.
Van Gils was involved in all three of ESU's goals, registering two assists and scoring the equalizer in the third quarter.
Notables
- Jady van Gils paced the Warriors with a goal and two assists. She leads the team with 12 goals and 10 assists for 34 points this season. The reigning national player of the year now has 28 career assists, placing her third all-time in program history.
- Minke Klijn opened the scoring for ESU in the 32nd minute, firing in a pass from van Gils. The Netherlands native now has 11 goals and three assists for 25 points this season.
- Bella Viruet sealed the win with the game-winner in overtime, giving her five goals on the year.
- The Warriors outshot Bloomsburg 20-8 and held a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. ESU also dominated in penalty corners, 16-5.
- Jet Vermeulen earned her ninth win in 10 decisions, playing the second half and 7:48 of overtime. Bloomsburg's Jackie Nevel made 10 saves in the loss.
