Millersville Pulls Away From Women’s Basketball in Fourth Quarter

MILLERSVILLE – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team entered the fourth quarter trailing Millersville by six points, but the Marauders pulled away to hand the Warriors a 53-34 loss in a PSAC East game on Saturday afternoon inside Pucillo Gymnasium.

Splitting the season series, the Warriors slipped to 8-17 on the year and 6-14 in the PSAC while the Marauders improved to 12-14 overall and 10-10 in the league following their fourth straight victory.

Despite Bloomsburg's (8-18, 6-14) victory over Shepherd this afternoon, ESU maintained hold of the No. 6 seed in the PSAC East standings after sweeping the season series from the Huskies on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Each team concludes the regular season next week with a pair of games as ESU takes on Kutztown (2/28) and Mansfield (3/2), while Bloomsburg battles nationally ranked Lock Haven (2/28) and West Chester (3/2).

Notables
  • Emily Chmiel notched her second straight double-double and sixth of the season as the junior had 14 points (5-for-8 FG, 4-for-6 FT) and 12 rebounds
  • In 26 minutes off the bench, fellow classmate Cassidy Saylor added 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and a steal
  • Senior Gwenn Sabato contributed five points and five rebounds while freshman Lacie Kringe (five rebounds) and junior Katie Geisler (four rebounds) each had two points
  • Junior Izzy Vogel registered five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals, while junior Corrin Gill had three rebounds, two assists and two steals
  • Milllerville's Makiah Shaw poured in a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, two blocks, one assist and a steal. Seven other Marauders scored including Morgan Mahoney (six rebounds, two steals, one block) with nine points and Juliana Vinluan (six rebounds) with eight points.
  • ESU was held to their second lowest shooting percentage of the season as the Warriors finished at 23.3 percent (14-for-60) overall. The Marauders shot 34.8 percent (23-for-66) from the floor.
  • Neither ESU nor Millersville knocked down a three-pointer as the teams combined to shoot 0-for-16
  • At the free throw line, the Warriors shot 60.0 percent (6-for-10) and the Marauders went 7-for-15 (50.0%)
  • Millersville had the advantage in rebounds (48-43), offensive rebounds (18-15), bench points (40-19), points in the paint (28-20), turnovers (14-22) and points off turnovers (15-12)
How It Happened
  • The teams went back and forth through the first six minutes of the game as the score was tied at 6-6 until Millersville knocked downed down a jumper with 4:00 on the clock. Out of an ESU timeout, the Marauders closed out the first quarter on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 14-6.
     
  • Millersville carried over momentum into the second quarter as the Marauders scored nine of the first 13 points to extend their advantage to 23-10, but a quick 6-0 run by ESU pulled them within seven at 23-16. Over the final 1:41 of the first half, Millersville outscored ESU by one point (4-3) to secure a 27-19 lead headed into the break.
     
  • ESU opened the second half on a 6-2 run, but the Marauders scored three straight points into the media timeout to regain a 32-25 edge. The Warriors settled back in with a 5-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 32-30, however Millersville ended the third quarter by scoring six of the final eight points to maintain a 38-32 lead.
     
  • The Marauders were on fire in the fourth quarter as a 13-0 run helped extend the lead to 51-32 before Chmiel knocked down a jumper with 2:45 remaining. Millersville scored the game's final two points to earn a 53-34 victory.

ESU plays its final road game of the regular season on Wednesday as the Warriors travel to Keystone Arena to battle Kutztown at 5:30 p.m.
