No. 4 ESU Shuts Down Marauders in PSAC East Opening Victory

EAST STROUDBURG – Trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, No. 4 ESU allowed just one Millersville goal over the 30 minutes of play, outscoring the Marauders, 10-1, in an 11-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon in the rain at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors (4-0, 1-0 PSAC East) remain undefeated and picked up a win in its conference opening game. The Marauders (2-3, 0-1 PSAC East) have fallen in three straight contests after starting the season with wins over Jefferson and Holy Family.

With the win, ninth-year head coach and ESU alumna Xeni Barakos-Yoder '11 recorded her 106th win (106-29), tying the all-time program wins leader and current Warrior field hockey head coach Sandy Miller. Barakos-Yoder looks to become the program's all-time wins leader on the road against No. 1 Pace on Saturday.
 
Offensive Notables
  • Hannah Schiemer paced ESU with a career-high five goals, opening the game with the Warriors' first four goals. The reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year ranks second on the team with 12 goals.
  • Emily Mitarotonda registered four goals and two assists for six points against the Marauders. She now has 24 goals, and seven assists for 31 points in five contests to open her senior season. She has registered at least three points in every game this season. The Rockaway, N.J. native leads the conference in goals per game (4.80) and points per game (6.20), while ranking third in caused turnovers per game (3.2) and fifth in ground balls per game (3.0).
  • Jolee Roth and Mac Maloney also found the back of the cage with goals, while Courtney Reynolds distributed an assist.
  • The Warriors led 32-24 on shots, 23-15 on shots on goals and 32-30 on ground balls.
Defensive Notables
  • GK Abby Simonetti was a brick wall, allowing just three goals while making 11 saves four her fourth consecutive win in the cage. The Millington, Md. native leads the PSAC in both goals against average (6.01) and saves percentage (.672), while ranking fifth in saves per game (8.60).
  • Mitarotonda, Reynolds, Schiemer, Taylor Vara, and Molly Atwell all caused two turnovers.
  • Paige Moreland and Claire Hoffman scooped four ground balls, with, Schiemer, Vara, Roth, Jameson Kernaghan and Mary Fitzsimmons all totaling three.
  • On draws, Mitarotonda secured three draw controls, while Molly Atwell and Alexis Neumen each tallied two.
How It Happened
  • Millersville opened the game with momentum with Jodylynn Cadden scoring first at 12:50 mark in the first quarter. Schiemer answered with her first of five goals next to knot the game up. The defensive battle featured just one additional goal over the final 11 minutes of the first quarter, with Liv Genovese scoring her first of two goals on the day.
  • With the Marauders leading 2-1 after the opening 15 minutes, the Warriors took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring six unanswered goals to take a 7-2 halftime lead. Schiemer registered five goals by halftime, with Mitarotonda and Roth also firing goals.
  • The Marauders answered the 6-0 Warrior run with their third and final goal with 7:56 remaining in the third frame, with Genovese scoring her second. Mitarotonda sent the next three goals into the back of the net, while Maloney scored her first goal of the season with a second remaining in the fourth quarter.
