EAST STROUDSBURG – Despite graduating 10 seniors, half of which were NFHCA All-America selections, the No. 2 East Stroudsburg University field hockey team picked up where it left off with a 6-0 victory against No. 5 Saint Anselm on Friday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
The Warriors (1-0), who reached the NCAA Division II National Championship each of the past two seasons, begin the 2024 season with a win. The Hawks (0-2) seek a win in their home opener on Thurs., Sept. 12 against Maryville.
Notables
- A total of five Warriors accounted for ESU's six goals, with reigning NFHCA National Player of the Year Jady van Gils leading the way with two goals and an assist for five points.
- Allyson Forman and Jessica Seidel each totaled three points, with a goal and an assist.
- Minke Kiljn and Bella Viruet each scored a goal, while Emma Friend and Kerry Kaufman added assists.
- The Warriors split time between three goalkeepers in the combined shutout. Jet Vermeulen played the first half, without facing a shot in goal. Sydney Pope entered the contest at halftime and tallied three saves in 25-plus minutes of work. Saar van Berckel closed the game in the final 4 minutes and did not face a shot on goal.
- ESU led 10-7 in shots and 8-3 on shots on goal. ESU held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
- Head coach Sandy Miller began her 40th season at the helm of the Warriors with a victory and now holds 498 wins in her career at ESU.
