Warriors Come Up Short After 11-Point Comeback

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — The East Stroudsburg women's basketball team fell, 68-62, to Mercy in its final nonconference game of the season after rallying from an 11-point deficit.

ESU (4-7) shot cold in the second and third quarters but came back to take a fourth-quarter lead. However, Mercy (8-5) emerged victorious in the final minutes.

Notables:

Emily Chmiel posted her second 30-point double-double of the season, finishing with 30 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, one block, and 50% shooting. This marks her eighth double-double of the season, tying her for the NCAA  DII lead.

Izzy Vogel tallied eight points, three rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal.

The Warriors had the advantage in points in the paint (40-22) and field goals made (27-21), but Mercy held the edge in shooting percentage (51.2%-36%) and free throws (21-8), which were key to their victory.

How It Happened:

After a 6-6 tie, ESU went on a 10-0 run driven by Chmiel, Brie Droege, Brooke Droege, and Vogel. Mercy responded with a 10-4 run to bring the score to 20-16 at the end of the first quarter. The Mavericks continued their push to take a 29-28 lead at halftime, thanks to 50% shooting, and extended their lead to 11 after shooting 60% in the third quarter.
The double-digit deficit did not deter the Warriors, who opened the final quarter with a 15-0 run, sparked by Vogel and capped by a Katie Geisler (pictured above) basket. Chmiel scored 11 points during the run, giving ESU a 54-50 lead after trailing by double digits. Mercy eventually tied the game at 58-58 with 2:48 remaining. Both teams responded to one another's attacks, with the game reaching its final tie with 1:12 left. Mercy gained the advantage down the stretch to defeat ESU, 68-62.
