EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — In a down-to-the-wire finish late Thursday night in East Stroudsburg, the Warriors' men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Millersville, knocking ESU out of a top-three seed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors pressed hard early in the game, generating the first handful of quality looks of the match. Their best chance came in second minute off a corner, as Ethan Flickinger got a header off that went just over the right corner of the net.
- Millersville struck first in the 22nd minute. Brian O'Neill settled a pass from Roy Parkyn outside the box, and fired off a shot to the top left corner of the net, giving the Marauders the advantage halfway through the first half.
- Coming out of the break, the Warriors had momentum off of a couple of chances, finally breaking through in the 61st minute. Ryan Kiernan won a header on the back post, and rather than go for the low-angle shot, he sent it across the box as Hunter Stites came crashing down to bury it and even the game.
- After some pressure of their own, the Marauders tallied a late goal to take the lead in the 83rd minute. Juan Ortiz Escobar had the ball in the box near the goalline to the left of the net and sent a pass across that went by the first Marauder and made it an open O'Neill. After a richochet, O'Neill's shot found the back of the net to put Millersville back in the lead.
- The Warriors had two looks at a game-tying goal in the last stretch, one chance that went wide off a back-post header coming off of a cross, and another shot that went just wide of the post.
GAME NOTES
- The Warriors outchanced Millersville, recording 15 shots to the Marauders' four, but Millersville was opportunistic with three shots on goal to East Stroudsburg's five.
