MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The ESU baseball team dropped its first PSAC contest of the season, falling 8-3 to Millersville at Cooper Park.
PITCHING NOTABLES
- Ryan Dewees got the nod for ESU, making it through 3.1 IP. He struck out four Marauders, but Millersville got on the board in his last two innings with four earned runs on four hits.
- Peyton Brannock came out of the bullpen to relieve Dewees in the fourth, finishing the game through the bottom of the sixth. He got ESU out of a jam in the fourth and threw a scoreless fifth inning, but ran into trouble in the sixth.
BATTING NOTABLES
- Cole Serfass and Easton Albert drove in the three runs for ESU, Serfass finishing with two and Albert adding one late. Both went 1-3 at the plate on the day.
- Parker Frey, Zander Condeelis, and Connor Reilly were the three Warriors to reach base safely multiple times today. Frey and Condeelis both went 1-3 with a single and a walk, while Reilly drew two bases on balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first two innings went nearly identically for both pitchers, as Millersville's Alex Kuehne and Dewees both only faced seven batters going into the third. ESU had a chance in the top of the third to strike through after Condeelis singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but he was picked off to end the inning. Millersville came back up to bat and did so in the bottom half of the inning. Christian Cerone hit a high-flying double to center field, which was followed by Donis Rodriguez drawing a walk. Jimmy Kirk came up with two outs, hitting a line drive to the right field wall that scored both runners.
- The Warriors were able to load the bases with two outs their next time up, but left them stranded to end the top of the fourth. The Marauders got the bats going again in the bottom half of the inning, getting runners in scoring position with one out. Cerone lined a single up the middle to drive in both runners, making it 4-0 through four innings.
- The Warriors gained some ground in the sixth, chasing Kuehn and forcing Millersville to bring in Joe Morrissey. Troy Davis reached base and made it all the way to third on a fielding error by the right fielder, setting up Serfass to hit an RBI single to left field for ESU's first run. After Morrissey came in, Reilly walked again to move Serfass up to second base. Albert singled to right field, bringing home Serfass and cutting the Marauders' lead in half.
- However, Millersville had a response that put the game away their next time up. Kirk came through with a grand slam to left that pushed the lead to 8-2 going into the final inning. A sacrifice fly from Serfass scored Zampella to make it 8-3, but ESU was unable to close the gap any further.
