EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — After 41 years, two NCAA Division II championships, four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, and 530 total wins, Sandy Miller announced her retirement as the ESU field hockey head coach on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Miller, who joined ESU in 1984, has led the Warriors' field hockey program since then across 41 seasons. She's amassed a career record of 530-296-11, concluding her tenure with the third-most head-coaching wins in Division II and becoming one of four coaches to eclipse 500 career victories. Miller worked throughout the ESU Athletics Department in the first half of her time in the Poconos, spending 20 years as the head coach of the women's lacrosse team from 1985-2004, as well as serving as an assistant coach on the women's basketball staff for her first 12 years.

"Coach Miller, thank you for the past 41 years of coaching and service to our athletic department," Dr. Allen G. Snook Jr., Director of Athletics, said. "Your impact stretches far beyond the field, and the character you built in your players will last for generations. Thank you again for the memories of my first national championship in 2022, and happy retirement." 

"Words cannot fully express what Coach Miller has meant to East Stroudsburg University, the PSAC, and the sport of field hockey," Kenneth Long, President of East Stroudsburg University, said. "Her nearly 42 years of leadership at ESU reflect an extraordinary commitment to excellence and represents everything it means to be a Warrior. While her legacy will forever be part of our university's history, her greatest impact lives on in the thousands of athletes, coaches, educators, and friends she has inspired, including me.

Miller has been the ESU field hockey head coach for over 70% of the program's contests, cementing the Warriors as a perennial NCAA contender in the most competitive conference the sport has at the Division II level over the past decade. While her all-time winning percentage stands at an impressive .640, her teams have dominated opponents since their first Division II championship campaign in 2015, going 173-40 (.812) and making the NCAA Tournament each season over that stretch.

The legendary coach has received plenty of shine for her work as the leader of the ESU field hockey program, joining the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame as a member of its 2024 induction class. Miller has been named the NFHCA Coach of the Year five times, PSAC Field Hockey Coach of the Year three times, and was also tabbed the PSAC Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2000 as she led ESU to its first double-digit win season.

"My years at East Stroudsburg University have been among the greatest blessings of my life," Miller said. "I truly loved every moment of my coaching experience and am deeply grateful to the current and former presidents, administrators, athletic directors, colleagues, and supporters who believed in me and helped make our success possible."

Miller's philosophy has always been centered around doing things the right way, whether that meant making a positive impact in the community, excelling in the classroom, or winning games at Whitenight Field. Among the accolades Miller's Warriors have earned are five Honda Broderick Award nominations, two NFHCA National Player of the Year awards, 92 NFHCA All-America selections, four PSAC Athlete of the Year awards, and 169 All-PSAC selections. Factor in four NCAA Division II Elite 90 awards, 13 CSC Academic All-Americans, six PSAC Top 10 honors, and 68 NFHCA Scholars of Distinction awards, and Miller has molded ESU field hockey into one of the top all-around programs in all of Division II.

"One of the guiding principles of our program was, 'family first, academics second, and field hockey third,'" Miller said. "We truly believed we were one big family. We celebrated together, supported one another through challenges, and held each other accountable to high standards. That family atmosphere became the foundation of our success."

Assistant Coach Katie Ord, who also played under Miller from 2003-06, has worked alongside her for over 15 years. Ord, who Miller has helped develop as both a player and a coach, said Miller's legacy will go beyond her success on the field.

"It has been a real honor to work with Sandy during these past 15 years in coaching," Ord said. "Her passion for the game and caring for her athletes has been admirable. I've watched her give so much to the sport and specifically in mentoring other coaches at ESU and in the field hockey world. I am forever grateful for her believing in me as a player and as an assistant coach. She has given so much to the game that will leave a lasting impact for years to come. We always say how blessed we are not to just have a great working relationship, but a friendship as well."

It's nearly impossible to quantify Miller's impact at ESU during her 41 years with the athletics department. Across field hockey, women's lacrosse, and women's basketball, she's coached 571 letterwinners and been on the sidelines for 1,408 games. The wins and losses aside, Miller said she'll forever treasure her time at ESU.

"As I reflect on my tenure at ESU, I am filled with pride and gratitude," Miller reminisced. "The championships, awards, and dancing parties after the big victories will always be special. But what means the most to me are the relationships that were built, the lives impacted, and the privilege of watching so many young women grow into confident, successful adults. It has been an incredible journey, and I will always be thankful to East Stroudsburg University for giving me the opportunity to live my passion and be part of something so meaningful."

An announcement for the next head coach of the ESU field hockey program will be made later this week.
