Johnson Named ESU’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week
EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore forward Duane Johnson has been named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week for his performance for the men’s basketball team in two games last weekend.
Johnson (Lansdowne/Penn Wood) scored a career-high 23 points at IUP and had seven points, six rebounds and a career-high six assists at California. He averaged 15.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 67 percent from the floor and making three of his six three-point attempts.
Johnson made his first nine shots from the field, finishing 9-for-11, at IUP to surpass his previous career-high of 17 points against Edinboro in the Pocono Classic. His 23 points capped a run of four straight games in double figures, a span in which he averaged 15 points and shot 61 percent.
A first-year starter, Johnson leads the Warriors with 11.3 points and is second with 5.2 rebounds per game entering the start of the PSAC East schedule on Wednesday night against Cheyney as ESU begins defense of its PSAC East regular season championship from a year ago.
Johnson was a three-time PSAC East Freshman of the Week last season, averaging 6.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game with 20 steals and 17 blocked shots. Already one of the most versatile players in the PSAC, he ranks in the top 10 in the conference with 3.0 offensive rebounds per game and is shooting just under 48 percent in his career.
