John Whitelavich is in his second year after returning to East Stroudsburg University for his second tour of duty. He brings nearly 40 years of football coaching experience to the sidelines at the high school, college and semi-pro levels.
Whitelavich, a 1970 graduate of East Stroudsburg and a two-year letterwinner for the Warriors, was an assistant coach during the 1976 season, a 9-0-1 campaign that ended with a 14-14 tie with Shippensburg in the state championship game. Since then, he has spent most of his time in coaching at North Pocono High School, where he was a Health and Physical Education and Driver Education teacher from 1974 until 2006. He began his career in education in the Wayne Highlands school district.
Whitelavich was the head football coach at North Pocono for five seasons (2002-06) and was previously head coach at Lakeland High School for five years (1997-2001). He has also been an assistant coach at the high school level at Western Wayne, Abington Heights and Honesdale, in college at the University of Scranton and also assisted the Scranton Eagles at the semi-pro level. He was the head tennis coach at North Pocono from 1978 through 2005. Most recently, he served on the football coaching staff at Scranton Prep for the last two seasons.
Whitelavich obtained his Master of Education degree in Physical Education from ESU in 1981. He resides in Mayfield, Pa. with his wife, Diane.
