EAST STROUDSBURG – Derrick Price ran for 165 yards and a touchdown and Kenny Domzalski put the game away with a 28-yard touchdown run with 4:15 remaining as No. 5 Bloomsburg defeated East Stroudsburg University, 27-13, on Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Huskies (7-0, 4-0) went 98 yards in four plays on the game-deciding drive, all on the ground, after being backed up to their two-yard line following a 50-yard punt by redshirt senior wide receiver
Sam Shuman, who was pressed into the punting duties for the first time in his career.
Price ran for eight yards to the 10-yard line, then went 59 yards with redshirt sophomore
Shawnte Carroll making a touchdown-saving tackle at the 31-yard line. Domzalski took over with a three-yard carry and scored on the next play from 28 yards out to give Bloomsburg a 27-13 lead with the extra point from Jon Koenig.
The Huskies ran 44 times for 256 yards in the game, led by Price's 165 yards on 23 carries and 81 yards on nine carries by Domzalski. Quarterback Dan Latorre was 11-for-21 for 137 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
The Warriors (5-2, 2-2) made it a one score game (20-13) with an eight play, 80-yard march midway through the third quarter engineered by redshirt junior quarterback
Matt Marshall, who threw for 59 yards and had an 22-yard run on the drive. Shuman hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass, his 14th career touchdown, with 6:59 left in the third period.
Bloomsburg's fourth-ranked scoring defense in Division II limited the Warriors to 10 yards the rest of the way. ESU started drives at the Bloomsburg 43 and its own 41 and 48 yard-lines in the fourth quarter, trailing 20-13, but went three-and-out on all three possessions before the Huskies' final touchdown drive.
The game's first three scoring plays all came on field goals, with ESU redshirt junior
Drew Reinhard and Koenig trading 26-yard kicks in the first quarter and Reinhard hitting a career-long 40-yarder with just under eight minutes left in the second quarter.
Bloomsburg took its first lead of the game just 37 seconds later, as Domzalski broke a 38-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and Latorre hit Cory Stiger for the touchdown from 29 yards out two plays later.
The Huskies took their 10-6 lead into the locker room and extended it to 20-6 in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Koenig drilled a 49-yard field goal after Bloomsburg received the opening kickoff, then turned a fumble on the ensuing kickoff into a 27-yard touchdown run by Price to push the margin to 14 points with 10:20 left in the third.
Marshall led the Warriors on their next drive, culminating in the 27-yard TD pass to Shuman, but ESU was unable to come back from a double-digit deficit in the second half for the second straight week following a come-from-behind 21-20 win at West Chester.
Marshall finished the game 16-for-29 for 215 yards and was picked off twice in the second half. ESU went 10 quarters without a turnover since the fourth quarter of the Shippensburg game three weeks ago.
Freshman tailback
Kendrick Williams gained 106 all-purpose yards in his first career start, running for 49 yards on 16 carries and leading the Warriors with 57 yards on three receptions. Freshman
Bryan Ogden also set career-highs with four catches for 44 yards.
Defensively, the Warriors forced three turnovers and locked down the Huskies on five straight possessions in the third and fourth quarters – four three-and-outs and a fumble recovery – before the long touchdown drive.
Senior safety
Nicholas Artinger had two interceptions, giving him five this season. Latorre had thrown one interception in 129 attempts entering the game and went 124 straight passes without an interception before Artinger's first pick in the second quarter.
Sophomore linebacker
Mike Bergey led ESU with 11 tackles, redshirt sophomore
Taylor Cave and junior
Mark Kalo had nine and redshirt junior
Matt Freed had eight tackles (3.0 TFL) and two sacks.
Bloomsburg got to Marshall for six sacks, including the Warriors' final two offensive snaps of the game, both by Marcus Zimmerman. Middle linebacker Anthony Smith had 10 tackles, Domenique Price and Vince Browning both had interceptions and the Huskies also came away with two fumble recoveries to force four turnovers.
ESU, ranked fifth in last week's NCAA Division II Super Regional One rankings, travels to Kutztown for next Saturday's 1 p.m. start with the Golden Bears.
