SLIPPERY ROCK – Senior Lynn Mayer won her fourth straight PSAC championship in the high jump, junior Josh Hontz won the javelin with an NCAA automatic mark and senior Negus Graham ran the second-fastest time in Division II in the prelims of the 400m dash to lead an outstanding day for East Stroudsburg University at the PSAC Track & Field Championships on Friday at Slippery Rock.

Mayer won the high jump with a mark of 5-8 1/2, tying her season-best this year and edging runner-up Whitney Hendershot of Slippery Rock on total number of jumps. A five-time All-American, Mayer becomes ESU's third four-time PSAC champion in women's track and field and finished in the top three seven times.

Hontz had a mark of 222-8, the third-best in Division II and three inches off the school record, to become the Warriors' first PSAC champion in the men's javelin since Lance Branyan set the school record of 222-11 to win the second of his back-to-back titles in 1992. Sophomore Russell Hedrick was sixth with a mark of 193-5. (Josh Hontz PSAC Championships video.MOV">Josh Hontz video)

Junior Dan Johnson set the school record and placed third in the decathlon with 6,516 points, an NCAA provisional score that ranks 14th in the nation. He had the top time in the 400m (51.19) and second-best marks in the high jump (6-6 1/4), pole vault (14-1 1/4) and 1500m (4:34.78) to place behind Brady Wert of Slippery Rock and Chris Ammann of Lock Haven. He broke the school record of 6,471 points set by Greg Tymon in 1994.

Sophomore Rose Mascoli gave ESU a third-place finish in the women's 5000m, running 16:59.11 in a pack with the top four runners that finished a minute ahead of the eighth-place finisher. Mascoli, the school record holder in the 3K, 5K and 10K and a cross country All-American, will go after the 1500 and 3000 on Saturday.

The Warriors' men had two scoring performances in the long jump, where freshman Cory Kresge was sixth at 22-6 1/2 and junior Brandon Hillman was seventh at 22-5. Hillman enters Saturday's triple jump with the PSAC's top mark.

The women's squad also received scoring performances from senior Jackie Berthelsen in the shot put (38-2 3/4) and sophomore Aniyah Williams in the long jump (16-5 3/4), who competed in the long jump for the first time as a Warrior at last week's Kutztown Invitational.

The remainder of the Warriors' performances came in the prelims, where Graham (400m), junior Ian Melhorn (200m), senior Asher Ashfield (100m), sophomore Cory Young (110m hurdles) and the 4x100m relay will all enter Saturday with the top performances in their events and sophomore Mike Saparito set the school record in the 800m.

Graham will look to repeat his 200/400 double from the PSAC Indoor Championships when he hits the track on Saturday as the top seed in the 400 and No. 2 seed in the 200, behind teammate Melhorn.

His time of 46.63 in the 400 puts him second on the national performance list, breaks his own school record by one-hundredth of a second and is 1.6 seconds faster than the second-best time in the prelims.

In the 200, the Warriors have four of the top six times entering Saturday's final – Melhorn (1st, 21.53), Graham (2nd, 21.62), freshman Keith Parker-Washington (4th, 22.04) and Ashfield (6th, 22.07). Melhorn and Graham came into the meet with the PSAC's No. 1 and No. 2 times, Ashfield was eighth and Parker-Washington was the No. 12 seed. Melhorn's 21.53 is the second-fastest time in school history.

Ashfield and Melhorn will dual for the 100m dash title as they go into the final with the top two times. Ashfield won the first heat in 10.69, followed by Melhorn in the second heat in a career-best 10.70. They are looking to give the Warriors three straight champions in the event, following two-time champion Andrew McCloskey in 2009 and 2010.

The men's 4x100m relay of Ashfield, Parker-Washington, Graham and Melhorn won their heat with an NCAA provisional time of 41.00 seconds, setting up a showdown with Shippensburg for the title on Saturday. ESU's official time was 40.992, six-thousandths faster than Shippensburg's 40.998 that won the first heat. The two schools are 1.66 seconds ahead of Lock Haven, which was third in the prelims.

The Warriors have won the last two PSAC championships in the 4x100 and the last three in the 4x400, which will also be contested on Saturday as Graham, Melhorn, Parker-Washington and senior Greg Pammer defend their indoor title against Lock Haven, which has the PSAC's best time this season.

Young and sophomore Kyle Soden both ran personal bests to qualify for the finals of the 110m hurdles. Young's time of 14.56 was the best in the field, hit the NCAA provisional standard and is the second-fastest in school history behind former All-American Rusty Smith. Soden shattered his personal best in 14.78, tied for fourth in the prelims, and will also be among the top contenders in the high jump on Saturday.

Senior Jasmine Johnson will be seeded second in the women's 200 and 400 finals after posting two impressive times. She ran an NCAA provisional time of 56.27 to win the third heat in the 400, then turned in a half-lap of 25.04 to win the first heat of the 200.

Sophomore Lauren Ventrella reached the finals of the women's 100m hurdles by placing eighth in the prelims with a time of 15.04. Williams was ninth in 15.10 while also scoring in the long jump.

Ventrella led off for the women's 4x100m relay, which was seventh in the prelims in 48.28 to advance to the finals. The quartet of Ventrella, freshmen Nicole Brown and Rachel Pierantozzi and sophomore Lauren Hannan had a season-best without Johnson, who was held out to focus on the 200 and 400.

Saparito, the PSAC indoor champion, qualified eighth for the finals in a very fast field in the 800m. His time of 1:52.96 lowers the Warriors' 29-year old school record of 1:53.34 set by Brian Keim in 1982 but barely got him into the finals, which will feature five NCAA provisional qualifiers. Sophomore Mahmoud Aldeen (1:54.16) and junior Sam Janssen (1:55.25) missed the finals but both ran top-10 times in school history.

Saturday's finals will begin with the 4x100m relays on the track at 12:30 p.m., followed by Mascoli in the 1500m. The Warriors will have a number of opportunities to pick up major team points in the sprints, sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald will be among the favorites in the 3000m steeplechase later in the day and the meet will conclude with the 4x400m relays, scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

In the field events, the women's pole vault was pushed back to Saturday and will open the day. Freshmen Laura Beimfohr and James Homola, both from Oxford High School, will look to score in the pole vault for the second time in their careers.

The Warriors enter Saturday ranked fifth in the men's standings with 24 points and seventh in the women's standings with 16 points. Both teams are looking to place in the top five for the fifth straight year and the men have been in the top three in every PSAC Championship since the 2009 indoor meet.
