EAST STROUDSBURG – A total of 68 student-athletes from East Stroudsburg University received Academic Achievement Awards from the Division II Athletic Directors Association for the 2012-13 academic year, it was released Wednesday.
Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 through at least four semesters of college work while competing in an intercollegiate sport to be eligible for recognition. The Warriors placed 58 student-athletes on the squad last year, 70 in 2010-11, 52 in 2008-09 and 2009-10, and 44 in 2007-08.
A total of 17 student-athletes received the award for the third time in their careers – Barb Borst and Kelly Sorber (women's basketball), Corinne Fitzgerald and Rose Mascoli (women's cross country/track & field), Paige Fleagle (women's track & field), Sarah Dobroskey, Mical Fink and Mallory Pope (field hockey), Sarah Garman and Ashley McKenna (women's soccer), Ana Osowski (swimming), Rabecca Lausch (women's tennis), Kristina Perri and Megan Plumb (women's volleyball), Eric Boyer (baseball), David Radziak (football) and Khriswayne Wallace (men's soccer).
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference led all Division II conferences with 759 student-athletes representing 11 schools – up from 557 student-athletes and nine schools last year.
ESU's list includes:
* 7 Capital One Academic All-Americans – Corinne Fitzgerald and Rose Mascoli (women's cross country/track & field), Matt Tholis (men's track & field), Rabecca Lausch (women's tennis), Eric Boyer (baseball), Rebecca Smith (softball) and Khriswayne Wallace (men's soccer)
* 10 Capital One Academic All-District selections – Sarah Garman (women's soccer), Smith and Jennifer Denaro (softball), Braden Turner (wrestling), Fitzgerald, Mascoli, Tholis, Lausch, Boyer and Wallace
* 2 PSAC "Top 10" Award recipients – Tholis (spring) and Wallace (fall)
* The 2012-13 PSAC Pete Nevins Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year – Tholis
* ESU's Senior Scholar-Athlete Award winners – Fitzgerald, Mascoli and Boyer
* 14 All-PSAC selections
In the last six years, ESU student-athletes rank second in the PSAC in the number of Academic All-District selections (66) and PSAC Top 10 recipients (21), two measures of individual academic accolades.
ESU has led or co-led the PSAC in Academic All-District selections in three of the last six years. The Academic All-District and Academic All-America programs, presented by Capital One, are nominated, voted on and administered by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
