Express-Times: Delight for ESU at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – East Stroudsburg University set a school record in the men's shuttle hurdles and won its heat of the men's 4x400m relay, leading a heavy day of action for the Warriors on the second day of the 120th Annual Penn Relays on Friday at Franklin Field.

The quartet of sophomore Adam Robertino, freshman Ronald D'Eliseo, sophomore Derrick Washington and freshman Steven Morgan clocked a time of 59.81 in the shuttle hurdles, breaking a mark of 60.74 set in 1980.

The Warriors ran the shuttle hurdles at Penn for the first time since 2005 and knocked almost a second off one of ESU's oldest school records. Mike McKenzie, Dwayne Gilchrist, Rick Torbik and Van Youngblood set the previous mark at the Rutgers Relays 34 years ago.

The men's 4x400m relay won its heat of nine schools, including six Division I's – Mount Saint Mary's, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, Lehigh, New Hampshire and La Salle – along with California (Pa.) and Kingsborough CC.

ESU ran 3:16.50, twelve-hundredths off its season best, with D'Eliseo leading off in 49.8 followed by Washington (49.2), senior Keith Parker-Washington (49.4) and junior Damien Boham (48.0).

Individually, D'Eliseo and sophomore William Berry had strong days. D'Eliseo ran 53.79 in the 400m hurdles, placing third in his heat and 25th of 46 overall. He has an NCAA provisional time of 53.26 two weeks ago at Moravian.

Berry was second in the men's Eastern High Jump at 6-8 1/4 and has an NCAA provisional of 6-8 3/4 this year. Sophomore Seth Bailey tied for 13th at 6-5.

Junior Mike Smith was 18th of 27 in the men's Eastern Shot Put at 48-4 3/4 and is second in the PSAC with a mark of 52-0 1/2 this spring.

The men's 4x200m ran 1:29.46 with junior Kyle Rickard (22.6), Morgan (21.8), freshman Jeff Herring (23.1) and Parker-Washington.

Parker-Washington made his fourth straight appearance at Penn, running nine relays for the Warriors.

Junior Danielle Smith highlighted the women's 4x200m relay with an anchor leg of 23.9 seconds. The Warriors ran 1:42.65 with the group of senior Rachel Pierantozzi (27.4), senior Colleen Murphy (27.4) and freshman Alexis Bell (25.4), the fourth-fastest time in school history.

ESU will have two entrants on Saturday with junior Travis Toth in the men's collegiate hammer at 3:15 p.m., and the women's 4x800m Championship of America at 4:10 p.m.

On Thursday night, senior Chris Schneider set an ESU record in the 1500m (14:36.99).
