SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. - No. 7-ranked Wheeling Jesuit put five players in double figures and overcame a slow start to post a 78-67 win over East Stroudsburg University in non-conference men's basketball on Saturday at Shepherd University.
Senior forward
Rasheed Moore had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead ESU (0-2), which fell late to Shepherd, 72-69, in its season opener on Friday night.
Haywood Highsmith had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, Pat Moseh scored 14 points, Chase Lawson 13, Kyle Ritz 12 and Matt Stewart 10 for Wheeling Jesuit (2-0), which opened with a 71-53 win over Slippery Rock Friday.
ESU got out to an 8-0 start, but Wheeling Jesuit caught the Warriors at 13-all and went on to lead 40-30 at halftime.
A 13-3 start to the second half gave WJU a 53-33 lead. ESU cut into the deficit late in the contest, making it 73-58 with 2:06 left and pulling within nine (76-67) with 10 seconds to go.
Redshirt sophomore forwards
Chris Bing (9 points, 6 rebounds) and
Josh Williams (7 points, 4 rebounds) also had contributions for the Warriors.
Moore's 29 points on the opening weekend of the season give him 1,184 in his career, surpassing Pete Pasko (1,162 - 1941-43) for 17th in school history. He has 594 career rebounds, three from Ed Urie (597 - 1985-90) for 10th. Urie was posthumously inducted to the ESU Athletic Hall of Fame last month.
ESU held a 23-20 turnover margin, but WJU shot 52.1 percent from the field, including 60.0 percent (12-for-20) in the second half.
Wheeling Jesuit went 28-4 last season, gaining the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, before falling to PSAC champion Mercyhurst in the first round.
ESU remains on the road for a Wednesday night contest at Concordia (N.Y.) before its home opener at Koehler Fieldhouse next weekend. The Warriors host Clarion on Saturday (Nov. 19) and Pitt-Johnstown (Nov. 20) on the opening weekend of PSAC crossover action.
