SALISBURY, Md. – Senior
Kaylyn West beat out a field of 106 runners in the women's 6k race to highlight a strong overall performance for East Stroudsburg University's cross country teams at Salisbury's Don Cathcart Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Warrior women ranked first out of 11 schools in the team standings, and the men finished second out of 11 overall. Freshman
Rachael Davalos and senior
Samantha Young also placed in the top five for the women, while freshman
Casey Ellis led a group of four men who ranked ninth through 12th in the men's 8k event.
West completed the course in 21:39.47, beating out second-place Marissa Coombs from Virginia Wesleyan by over 15 seconds. This is the second-career individual title for the Mount Joy, Pa., native, who also had a first-place showing at the Hamilton Invitational during her junior season.
ESU's women's program has now had at least one individual champion in each of the past eight seasons dating back to 2010. West's finishing time was the third-quickest in team history on Salisbury's course.
Davalos, meanwhile, set an ESU freshman record at Salisbury with her fourth-place effort of 22:00.22. Young (22:03.10) was only three seconds behind in fifth place.
Senior
Jasmine Amro (10th, 22:39.97) and sophomore
Rachel Eidson (17th, 23:14.67) rounded out the scoring for the Warriors, whose team score of 37 points was 12 ahead of the host Seagulls in second place. This is the fourth time that the program has earned a team title at Salisbury; the previous three championships were in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
Ellis paced a close-knit pack of ESU men for a third-consecutive meet. He crossed the line in 25:48.82, registering a time which is the second-fastest by a Warrior freshman at Salisbury all-time. Less than six seconds separated Ellis, sophomore
Jeremy Smith (25:49.82), sophomore
Mike Sheptuk (25:52.74) and senior
Dan Buccino (25:53.73) in the ninth through 12th positions, while senior
J.P. Montgomery (26:10.22) was not far behind in 14th place.
There were a total of 114 runners competing in the men's race. The Warriors finished with a team score of 56 points, 28 back of Salisbury in first and 43 ahead of Bridgewater (Va.) in third.
The cross country teams have only one more meet before the PSAC Championships at California on Oct. 21. That meet, the DeSales Invitational, is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. next Saturday.
