ESU Men’s Soccer Suffers 6-2 Defeat at Bridgeport

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Leandro Avila scored twice in a span of 1:33 midway through the second half, giving Bridgeport a lead it would not relinquish in a 6-2 victory over East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday.

The Warriors (9-6) took a 2-1 lead on a 57th minute goal by junior Irvin Zuzic, but surrendered five goals to the Purple Knights (9-4-1) over the remainder of the contest.

Avila's tying strike came less than five minutes after Zuzic's marker, and he put the home side ahead for good with 27:08 left in regulation.

Tom Gordon, Oscar Facey and Nikolai Vadseth added insurance goals for Bridgeport, which earned the win despite trailing 20-15 in shots.

Graduate student Jordon Ellison opened the scoring for the Warriors, taking a feed from senior Eddy Enowbi and firing in his fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute. Ellison has recorded six points (2 G, 2 A) over ESU's last four contests.

Enowbi would add another assist on Zuzic's second-half goal, giving him five helpers on the year and a team-high 21 points overall. Zuzic, meanwhile, now has four goals to go along with his team-best seven assists.

The teams were tied 1-1 heading into the intermission, as Vadseth evened the score for Bridgeport 30 seconds after Ellison's strike. Vadseth's second goal came with 58 seconds remaining in the second half.

Redshirt freshman Evan Miele made six saves while making his second start in goal this season.

The Warriors, who have already clinched a spot in the PSAC tournament and a chance to defend their 2017 championship, wrap up the regular season with a 12 p.m. matchup at Mercyhurst on Saturday. ESU can finish anywhere between third and sixth in the conference standings based on this weekend's results; the PSAC first round contests will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
