Mercyhurst Rallies for 3-2 Overtime Victory over ESU Men’s Soccer in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. – Henri Tophoven scored the tying goal with 7:09 left in regulation, and he added the game-winner 57 seconds into overtime to complete a 3-2 comeback victory for Mercyhurst over East Stroudsburg University on Saturday.

Senior Brandon Levano and junior Marcus Torgersson each scored in the opening 10 minutes of the contest for the Warriors (9-7, 6-5 PSAC) but they were unable to hold their two-goal advantage over the Lakers (9-6-2, 5-4-2 PSAC). ESU now awaits its seed and opponent for the opening round of the PSAC tournament on Tuesday.

Graduate student Jordon Ellison assisted on both Warrior goals, as he set up Levano 6:11 into the contest, and he took the corner kick on ESU's second strike 63 seconds later.

Ellison's corner was flicked on by junior Irvin Zuzic to Torgersson, who headed in his fourth goal of the season. Ellison and Zuzic now have eight assists apiece on the year, tied for the most by a Warrior player since Toric Robinson had eight back in 2008.

That 2-0 score held until the 54th minute, when Chris Lund recorded an unassisted goal for the Lakers. Mercyhurst had eight of the game's 11 shots after the intermission, generating pressure that ultimately led to the tying goal late.

Tophoven's game-winner came on the first scoring attempt of overtime.

Mercyhurst avenged a pair of defeats to the Warriors last fall, including a 3-0 win for ESU in the first round of the PSAC tournament. That victory was the first of three for the Warriors on their way to the 20th conference title in program history.

ESU will be the No. 5 or No. 6 seed for this year's tournament, with the Warriors on the road for Tuesday's playoff opener.
