ESU Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Felician 109-85; Wilson Earns 300th Career Victory

Box Score

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The 300th win at East Stroudsburg University for head coach Jeff Wilson played out like many others over the past 16+ seasons.

Five players scored in double figures, and the Warriors raced out to a 62-38 halftime advantage before ultimately topping Felician by a 109-85 final on Tuesday evening. Wilson becomes the ninth coach in PSAC men's basketball history to reach 300 career victories.

Senior Nick Giordano matched a career-high with 24 points, redshirt senior Josh Williams set career-highs in both points (22) and rebounds (17) and freshman Ryan Smith recorded his second-straight double-double with 21 points and 13 boards. ESU (2-2) had three players reach 20 points in a game for the first time since Dec. 8, 2012 in a win over Cheyney.

Wilson improves to 300-165 (.645 win percentage) during his tenure at ESU. The 1986 ESU graduate has led the Warriors to 13 straight winning seasons, including six with at least 20 victories, three PSAC championships (2012, 2014, 2018) and a Division II Atlantic Region title last winter.

Freshman Shamir Johnson added 12 points off the bench, and redshirt senior Jakwan Jones supplied 10 points, four assists and four steals for the Warriors.

With the score tied at 14-14 early in the opening half, a layup by junior Michal Weiss began a 19-2 run for the visitors which gave them a comfortable advantage. ESU would maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

The Warriors' 62 points in the first half were the most since they recorded 66 in a home victory over Chestnut Hill last November; that total was the highest against a DII opponent for ESU under Wilson.

Giordano hit 9 of 18 shots from the field, including 3 of 6 attempts from 3-point range, to surpass 20 points for a third time in his collegiate career. Fourteen of his 24 points came in the opening half.

Williams had a night to remember inside, becoming the first ESU player since February, 2017 to record 20+ points and 15+ rebounds in a game. He went 9 for 19 from the floor, and eight of his 17 rebounds came on the offensive end.

Smith, meanwhile, hit on 10 of his 14 field goal attempts, and six of his 13 boards were on the offensive side of the court. The Warriors finished the night with a dominant 55-35 edge on the glass.

ESU, which reached 100 points on 10 occasions during its run to the DII Elite Eight last winter, surpassed the century mark for the first time this season.

Zamir Wright had a game-high 25 points in a losing effort for the Golden Falcons (1-2).

The Warriors have five days off before returning to Koehler Fieldhouse next Monday night, when they will host Queens (N.Y.) in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Notes:

With his four steals on Tuesday, Jakwan Jones moved up to seventh in ESU history with 145 for his career. He is three back of Duane Johnson (2009-13) in sixth place.

Giordano's second 3-pointer tonight was the 150th of his collegiate career. He is sixth overall in team history, three back of Jamal Nwaniemeka (2013-16) in fifth place.
