GREENSBURG, Pa. – A four-point play from redshirt senior
Jakwan Jones highlighted an incredible comeback at the end of the second half, and East Stroudsburg University outscored Seton Hill by a 19-2 margin in overtime to secure a wild 84-67 road victory on Tuesday night.
The Warriors (7-2, 4-0 PSAC) extended their winning streak to seven games after trailing 63-54 with 1:23 remaining in regulation. ESU ultimately closed the contest on a 30-4 run over the final 6:23 of the contest.
Redshirt senior
Josh Williams led the visitors with 16 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Jones added 14 points and seven assists, while freshman
Ryan Smith supplied 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the floor.
Malik McKinney led the Griffins (2-7, 0-3 PSAC) with 17 points before fouling out in the closing seconds of regulation.
Seton Hill had a 32-26 advantage at the intermission, and led by as many as 11 points on three occasions late in the second half. ESU entered the contest leading Division II with 25.0 forced turnovers per game, but the Griffins had only 13 giveaways through the first 38 minutes.
Brandon Alston sank a 3-pointer with 1:36 left to give Seton Hill its late 63-54 lead. Smith responded with a layup on the other end, and after ESU's defense forced a shot clock violation, redshirt senior
Steven Stoney used a 3-point play to reduce the deficit down to 63-59 with 38 seconds on the clock.
McKinney fouled out on Stoney's drive inside, and the Warriors maintained possession after the referees determined that the foul was intentional. Smith quickly converted another layup, and ESU got the ball back trailing 64-61 after Seton Hill's Trevor Blondin hit 1 of 2 free throw attempts.
That set up Jones' heroics, as he initiated contact from Nathan Davis while banking in a 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left. The Warriors were up 65-64 after he sank the ensuing free throw.
The Griffins managed to force overtime after going 1 for 2 from the charity stripe with 0.1 seconds remaining, but ran out of gas in the extra session after six players (including the fouled out McKinney) combined for 223 of the team's 225 minutes in the contest.
Jakwan Jones and redshirt sophomore
Troy Jones had five points apiece during a 12-0 run to begin overtime which put the game out of reach for good.
Troy Jones (3-4 FG, 5-5 FT) had 12 points overall to lead a Warrior bench which outscored Seton Hill's reserves 36-10.
ESU continues to be the only unbeaten PSAC East team in conference play. The Warriors earned their first overtime victory since they topped Kutztown 99-91 on Feb. 28, 2012. This was only the third time that ESU has gone beyond regulation in the past seven seasons.
The Warriors are right back in action tomorrow night, as they face California (3-6, 1-2 PSAC) in another PSAC crossover contest at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Vulcans earned a 102-70 victory over Bloomsburg to pick up their first league win of the season earlier this afternoon.
