West Chester Edges ESU Men’s Soccer 1-0 in PSAC Opener for Both Teams

Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – Jason Pixley scored the lone goal of the game 7:19 into the opening half, and West Chester held off East Stroudsburg University the rest of the way to snatch a 1-0 victory at Eiler-Martin Stadium on Wednesday.

The Warriors (2-2, 0-1 PSAC) held an 11-8 edge in shots, and controlled play for a majority of final stretch, but were unable to get a goal past the backline of the Golden Rams (2-1-1, 1-0 PSAC).

Tonight's game was a rematch of both a PSAC semifinal and NCAA DII second round contest from last fall. The Warriors advanced 5-4 on PK's on their way to a PSAC championship in the first playoff meeting, while West Chester won in double-overtime during the national tournament.

Little separated the teams once again in this year's conference opener. The visitors broke through less than eight minutes in after Eric Greer sent a cross from the left side onto the foot of Pixley, who fired a low shot into the left-hand corner.

ESU's top chance to equalize came in the 30th minute, when graduate student Jordon Ellison drilled an attempt which was deflected by goalkeeper Will Marshall off the left post.

The Warriors had additional opportunities late in the second half, including a pair of shots by sophomore Anton Lysell and senior Jo Panuccio which required saves by Marshall in the 85th minute. ESU maintained possession for the final minutes, but was unable to get off another clear shot.

Marshall finished with five saves to earn his first victory of the season. Panuccio and Ellison combined for seven of ESU's 11 shots in the contest.

The Warriors were held without a corner kick for the entire 90 minutes, while West Chester had only two corner opportunities.

ESU remains at Eiler-Martin Stadium for its next contest, taking on Holy Family in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
