EAST STROUDSBURG – Graduate student
Jordon Ellison fired in a memorable first strike midway through the first half, and junior
Irvin Zuzic netted the go-ahead goal early in the second to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 2-1 victory over Holy Family on Wednesday.
The Warriors (3-2) halted a brief two-game losing streak, while the Tigers (3-4) saw their win streak end at three games.
ESU held a commanding 24-5 edge in shots, with strong defense allowing redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Evan Miele to register his first collegiate win without making a save.
Ellison's first goal as a Warrior came in the 21st minute. He took a long-distance pass from graduate student
Nico Gericke and powered a volley in midair past Holy Family goalkeeper Mark Pohl into the top right corner.
The Tigers, though, responded in less than two minutes, as Georg Montag converted off a free kick near the corner pole. Holy Family nearly took the lead towards the end of the half, but Montag's ranging shot was pounded off the crossbar.
Zuzic put ESU back in front shortly after the intermission, as he headed a 48th minute corner from Ellison past Pohl to make it 2-1. Zuzic now has registered points in four of ESU's five games, and his nine overall points (2 G, 5 A) are one back of senior
Eddy Enowbi for the team lead.
Holy Family earned five of their six corner kicks in the final 45 minutes, but the visitors managed only two off-target shots during the frame.
Enowbi had a team-high six shots for the Warriors, while Ellison followed with five and Zuzic had four.
Tonight's was ESU's final non-conference matchup of the regular season. The Warriors return to PSAC play on Friday afternoon, hosting California in a contest scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
