Second-Half Goal by Laredo-Fernandez Leads Warriors Past Millersville

Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior Mateo-Laredo Fernandez scored the lone goal five minutes into the second half, and East Stroudsburg University's defense held Millersville to just two shots on goal all afternoon to secure a 1-0 road victory on Sunday.

The Warriors (5-2, 2-1 PSAC) won their third-straight game, and they picked up their first victory over the Marauders (2-2-4, 0-1-1 PSAC) since the 2010 season.

Junior Will Boerema made two saves in goal to register his 15th career solo shutout. He was aided by a backline which surrendered a total of seven shots, with none occurring in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Laredo-Fernandez's goal was his second of the season, and both have been game-winners. He took a corner kick by graduate student Jordon Ellison and chipped a shot past Millersville goalie Darian McCauley.

Ellison picked up his fourth assist on the year, and he has at least one point in five of the team's past six contests.

The Marauders managed four shots after Laredo-Fernandez's strike, with a saved header from Ethan Woods at 79:24 the lone effort which was directed on target.

ESU ended the day with a 10-7 edge in shots; senior Eddy Enowbi generated a game-high five attempts.

The Warriors had been 0-6-1 in the past seven meetings against Millersville dating back to a 1-0 triumph in the PSAC tournament in 2010.

ESU's run to a PSAC championship last fall began in earnest with a 4-3 come-from-behind win in double overtime at Shippensburg on Sept. 27. The two teams will meet again at Eiler-Martin Stadium this Wednesday, with opening kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
