WASHINGTON, D.C. – Redshirt senior
Ahmad Awadalla scored on a penalty kick with just 10 seconds remaining to lift the East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against the University of the District of Columbia on Tuesday at Carlini Field on the campus of Catholic University.
The Warriors outshot UDC by a 14-5 margin in the game, and held the Firebirds without a shot for the opening 55-plus minutes of play.
After over 80 minutes of scoreless action, ESU's
Marcus Torgersson broke through for the first goal of the game. The senior received a ball from
Oliver Lundberg and beat goalie Javier Abadia for the goal, which was Torgersson's fourth of the season.
With just 1:30 remaining in the match, UDC's Gabriel Velluto received a pass from Pierre LaNoire and deposited it into the back of the net for the equalizer, knotting things up at 1-1.
In the waning seconds,
Trevor Paone worked his way into the box and was fouled by a UDC defender, resulting in a penalty kick for the Warriors with just 10 seconds showing on the clock. Awadalla calmy stepped up and converted the penalty kick for his first goal of the season to give ESU the 2-1 victory.
The Warriors improved to 8-3-3 on the year with the win, while UDC fell to 4-10 overall.
Riley Lougee earned his first start in goal with the Warriors and also picked up his first victory.
ESU returns to action next Wednesday, October 30 for a home match against Shippensburg at 4:30 p.m.
