EAST STROUDSBURG –
Oliver Verity,
Marcus Torgersson and
Irvin Zuzic registered multi-point performances to power the East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team to a 7-1 victory over Shippensburg on Wednesday at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The seven goals matched a season-high for the Warriors, as they also scored seven back in September against Felician.
Verity notched a career-high six points in the match on a pair of goals and two assists, while Torgersson and Zuzic registered a goal and one assist apiece.
Michael Tolley,
Nils Bjorquist and
Bradley Turocy added the other goals for the Warriors.
ESU improved to 9-3-3 overall on the year and 5-3-1 in PSAC East play while extending its win streak to three straight. Shippensburg fell to 2-8-3 overall and 2-7-1 in conference following the loss.
Starting ESU goalie
Evan Miele made two saves in net to collect his eighth win of the season.
Riley Lougee held Shippensburg off the board after taking over for Miele for the final nine-plus minutes of the game.
The Warriors took an early lead on a goal from Zuzic in the sixth minute of play. Off a corner,
Oliver Lundberg sent a ball past the far post where Torgersson got his head on it and redirected it back towards the middle. Zuzic was there to finish it off on the doorstep for his third goal of the season to put ESU on top.
ESU doubled up on its lead just over five minutes later as Torgersson found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year. Zuzic crossed one from outside the box towards the far post, and Torgersson sent a one-time volley into the upper left corner to make it a 2-0 game.
In the 27
th minute,
Teun Jacobs found Tolley with a cross in the middle of the box, and Tolley took a touch around goalkeeper Bradley Brickman before finishing from a tough angle to extend the advantage to 3-0. The goal was Tolley's second of the season.
The Warriors carried a 3-0 lead into the halftime break after outshooting Shippensburg 10-2 in the opening frame and holding a 7-2 advantage on corners.
The Raiders got one back early in the second half as Cory Ferguson picked up a loose ball in the box and finished for his third goal of the season, which cut the deficit to 3-1.
ESU got its offense going once again in the 64
th minute for its fourth score of the contest.
Sergio Bortolon sent a thru ball to Verity, who slotted one past goalie Bradley Brickman for his first goal of the campaign.
Heading into the final 15 minutes of play, Verity set up a pair of goals in a span of seven minutes to help the Warriors increase their advantage to five goals. Bjorquist received a pass from Verity inside the box and found the back of the net for his first of the season in the 76
th minute to make it 5-1 ESU. A few minutes later, Verity registered his second assist of the game as he crossed a free kick into the box, where
Bradley Turocy finished off a header to increase the lead to 6-1.
Just over one minute after Turocy's goal, Verity capped off his six-point night with his second goal of the contest. The sophomore fired a free kick from 20 yards out just to the left of the wall and into the lower left corner past a diving Brickman for the final goal of the contest.
ESU outshot the Raiders 18-5 in the match, including a 13-3 margin in shots on target. The Warrios also held an 11-5 advantage in corners.
The Warriors hit the road for a match at Lock Haven this Saturday, November 2 at 5 p.m.
