EAST STROUDSBURG – An early goal in the fifth minute from
Irvin Zuzic, paired with some timely saves by goalkeeper
Evan Miele, lifted the East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Lock Haven on Sunday at Eiler-Martin Field.
Just over four minutes into the match,
Oliver Lundberg sent a corner to the short side of the six-yard box, where Zuzic ran onto it and redirected a header into the lower right corner past a diving Camden Cook to give the Warriors an early lead.
ESU continued to control play for much of the first half, outshooting the Bald Eagles 8-2 while also holding an 8-0 advantage on corners.
With just over 13 minutes left in the contest, Beckham Sibiski sent a dangerous cross into the box which found its way past a couple Warriors defenders and headed towards the far post. Miele came up big with a lunging kick save to his left to clear the ball from danger and keep Lock Haven off the board.
In the waning minutes of the match, Lock Haven's Justin Douglas worked his way into the box and fired a shot from around 10 yards out that was ticketed for the back of the net. Miele got a hand on it for another huge save, but the rebound bounced to Sibiski in a dangerous area. Sibiski's attempt at the game-tying goal sailed wide, and ESU remained on top.
The Warriors were able to hold on and close out the 1-0 victory to improve to 5-2-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the PSAC East.
Miele made four saves in net for ESU, while Cook stopped eight for LHU.
ESU outshot Lock Haven 19-8 overall and held a 10-2 corner advantage.
The Warriors remain at home to take on Millersville on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
