EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman midfielder
Trevor Paone scored his first career goal in East Stroudsburg University's 1-1 draw with Millersville on Wednesday night in PSAC action from Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The draw pushed ESU to 5-2-3 on the year and 2-2-1 in PSAC East play, while Millersville moved to 5-4-2 overall and 3-0-2 in conference action.
After a slowly developing offensive first half for both teams, ESU was able to strike for the game's first goal in the 32
nd minute of play.
Oliver Lundberg dished it to
Anton Lysell midway into the attacking end, and Lysell sent a thru ball to a streaking
Trevor Paone who got behind the Millersville defense. Paone took a touch and slotted it into the lower left corner past a diving Darian McCauley for his first career goal, which put the Warriors on top with just under 14 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Warriors carried that 1-0 advantage in the break, but Millersville was able to register the equalizer in the 58
th minute. Off a corner, Anthony Calamia sent a short cross to the six-yard box, where Jake Gosselin flicked a header into the far right corner to knot things up at 1-1. The goal was Gosselin's seventh of the season.
The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into sudden-victory overtime. Early in the first overtime period, Lundberg sent a short pass off a corner to
Sergio Bortolon just outside the box. Bortolon lofted a shot that banged off the right post, but
Nick Kaelin was there to scoop up the rebound. Kaelin fired another shot that went just wide left of the net, as the game remained tied at 1-1.
The Warriors had one more scoring opportunity in the second overtime period.
Hubert Herrera picked up a loose ball and fired a rocket from around 25 yards out, which once again rattled off the post. Both defenses then held strong in the final minutes, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
ESU and Millersville both registered 12 shots in the contest, and the Mauraders held a 7-4 advantage on corners.
The Warriors travel to Shepherd for a match this Saturday, October 12 at 3:30 p.m.
