WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The third-seeded East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team fell at second-seeded West Chester, 2-0, on Tuesday in the PSAC Quarterfinals at Rockwell Field.
The Golden Rams will advance to the PSAC Semifinals, where they will face the top-seed from the PSAC West, Gannon.
The Warriors, who now sit at 11-5-3 overall on the year, will await to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA DII Tournament.
West Chester struck early for the game's first goal just 3:45 into play. On a free kick from around 35 yards out, Brett Miller sent one into the middle of the box and Doug Goitia volleyed it into the upper left corner for the goal, which was his team-leading eighth of the season.
With less than a minute remaining in the first half, ESU had its best scoring opportunity of the contest as
Bradley Turocy made a bid for the game-tying goal. After the Warriors drew a foul in the left corner deep in WCU territory,
Oliver Verity crossed the free kick towards the far side of the box. Turocy got up in the air and sent a header on target, but WCU goalie Daniel Good made a diving stop to his right to keep the Golden Rams on top.
The Warriors were outshot by a 5-3 margin in the opening half, including a 4-2 mark in shots on goal.
ESU had another scoring threat early in the second half, but just narrowly missed on capitalizing.
Juan Carlos picked up a loose ball at the top-right side of the box, and the sophomore lofted a shot over Good's head toward the upper left that sailed just wide of the far post.
West Chester was able to double up its lead in the 67
th minute of play on a goal by Miller off a corner kick. Miller curled a lefty cross that found its way into the upper left corner of the netting, just off an outstretched
Evan Miele's fingertips. The score gave the Golden Rams a 2-0 advantage with a little under 23 and a half minutes remaining.
The Warriors fired off four more shots in the final 23-plus minutes but WCU was able to keep them off the board to close out the 2-0 victory and advance to the PSAC Semifinals.
Good made three saves in net for the Golden Rams to record the win. Miele stopped four shots in goal for the Warriors.
WCU held an 11-7 shot advantage over ESU in the match, including a 6-3 margin in shots on goal.
